Your friend is obviously a very serious runner, but his heart issue could
be even more serious! The part that concerns me is the "pressure
feeling", this sounds a little heart attack-ish. Do him a favor and point
him to a cardiologist ASAP.
I have an irregular heart beat (atrial fibrillation), had it since my high
intensity competition days of HS & college, & it never curtailed my
training or performances. I am 33 & have just started running again after
a 10+ year layoff. I still feel great when I run, no abnormal chest
feelings & I pay really close attention to that.
Age is a factor because an irregular heartbeat can cause more serious
problems as folks get older. Some side effects are: *** clots and
oxygen deficiencies, etc. These and other side effects can be FATAL. A
good cardiologist will determine the severity of the irregular beat, what
he can & shouldn't do in terms of training. In my case, I'm am as if
nothing is wrong, I just take *** thinners to prevent clotting & get
regular checkup on my ticker, to ensure it keeps on ticking...
