St. George Marathon

St. George Marathon

What a great marathon...the downhills are brutal if you can't train in a
mountainous area.  Has anyone else run this? I ran my first ever marathon
there last weekend (4:40)  They ran out of water at mile 23.  Has this ever
happened in a long race before?   I was very disturbed about this,
considering the fact that all I could think about for three miles was water.
Poor planning???

Any recommendations for my next marathon?  Preferably in the southwest or
pacific region.

St. George Marathon

Laurie,
Congratulations on doing your first marathon. I ran St George last year-
originally as a scheme to get a finishing time that would qualify me for
Boston. In the end, bad knee problems severely curtailed my training but I
decided to do St George anyway. I thought it was a nice scenic course but,
as you say, the downhill really starts to do a number on your quads.

I'm surprised that they ran out of water because the whole crew seemed very
on the ball when I ran it in 1998. Hopefully they're aware that it happened
and will make sure no future runners suffer your fate.

One future marathon you might want to consider (there are so many to choose
from of course) is the San Francisco Marathon which is run the second week
in July. Lots of great scenery in a great city. (Ok, I'm bias cause I live
just south of SF...)

Good luck,
John
