knee weirdness

Post by Tasm » Tue, 30 Mar 1999 04:00:00

After a long run on saturday, my knee started hurting pretty bad under the
patella.  Sunday morning, I woke up with a large lump on the back of my leg
behind my knee, and a swollen calf.  I went to the doctor, she said that it was
a cyst, and told me to take aleve and ice it. She also referred me to a sports
doctor.  The problem is that even though this is happening now, I cant see a
doctor until almost the end of april!  So in the meantime,  I would love to
hear any advice from people that this has happened to!  thanks in advance.

knee weirdness

I have had cysts on the wrist for a while (1 year) before I got it
removed.  The key is - the cyst does not swell up.  It just hampers
movement.  I waited to get mine removed because I was a percussionist
and had to wait until I could schedule 1 month in a cast after it was
removed and physical therapy afterword.

I'm not trying to alarm you that this would need to be done for you.
It was because I was a collegiate All-American at the time and needed
special attention and a special process to make sure that there was a
better than full recovery.  Because of the special considerations, it
was an absolute success.

Back to the origional question:

Something else swelled, not the cyst.  Usually, asprin and ice is the
recommendation for swelling.  This should take care of that.

A cyst would not automatically appear either.  It takes a while to
form.  A cyst is not a blister.  It forms over time.

You should take special notice of the area.  Rub around the knee and
see if there is a cyst after the swelling goes down. I'm sure that the
doctor would be able to tell when your go back in April.  The fluid in
a cyst is a gell.  They may try to take it out with a needle first.
If that does not succeed, they will have the go in and cut it out.

By taking special notice, you can see if a cyst actually exists, or is
it something else?  Anyway, going to the DR in April is a good idea.

Continuing a normal lifestyle is usually fine.  I would recommend to
take it easy until the swelling goes down.  Afterward, continue to jog
as before, but stop and rest it if any problems may arise.  I don't
know your running regime, so I can't make any specific
recommendations.  You may have pushed too hard and the effect was
swelling.
