Back from San Francisco ... ready to race this morning

Post by John Hurle » Sun, 26 Sep 2010 18:49:55

I had a good week out at Oracle Open World.  Put in a bunch of miles
pounding the streets and concrete/asphalt ... except for one day at 60
minutes I think 90 minutes was the rule.

I went long tuesday and from downtown went down Market street to
Embarcadero then all the way to Golden Gate bridge ... over ... and
back.  Windy on the way to the bridge but the sun came out as I ran
the bridge and perfect conditions on the way back.

Legs felt pretty thick and heavy as the week dragged on.  No rest day
from last week ... no soft trails to run one ... extra mileage ... but
it is so nice to be running someplace different from the usual that I
kept dragging myself out.

San Francisco really is a nice town to run around in ... reasonable
temps and a pretty clean city ... with lots of interesting characters
out all the time.

Rested yesterday after spending most of the night and morning flying
back.  Ready to jump into a local 5k this morning.

Good luck all!

I've never run in San Francisco, but that brings back (suspiciously?) vague
memories of parking my car on the Marin County side of the bridge (would have
been 1981) and running across.

I'll add my congratulations on the 5K here. If I remember right, you are at
least 55. I know a bunch of fast runners 55 and up (at least one national-
class in his early 60s who can still break 20 minutes in a 5K) but I can't
remember any of them making the top three in a race with more than 150
participants. I hope you won't mind me envying you a little.

I did not make it far into Marin county ... one of the last big towers
on the bridge has a sign "Entering Marin County" ( or similar ).  I
passed that tower and ran maybe another 1/3 or 1/2 a mile then turned
around.

There are some good trails and stuff not far off the bridge in Marin
but I have never done any of them ( usually just thinking about long
run back ).

Holding at 54 right now until April.

The Cleveland mix of races and a declining number of runners probably
makes a fairly unusual opportunity at some of the events.

In the race I placed third in this year ( Crocker Park 5k for Jerrys
kids ) the winner was 3 minutes ahead and the second place guy maybe a
minute ahead of me.

That's a different dynamic to a race where you at least ( even if you
can not close on him ) have the 1st place guy not too far in front of
you.

Several times in the last 2 years I have had the police escort with
me ... better to have them in front of you than having them chase you
down right?

Like I said it is probably a pretty unusual dynamic for most
Metropolitan areas.

Looks like you had a good time in SF.
You just escaped the mini heat wave that started yesterday and is
expected to continue into next week. 90F - which is pretty hot for the city.
