HELP FOR TIGHT CALVES

Post by GOL » Wed, 23 Jul 1997 04:00:00

I am 51 and have been running for a number  of  years (20) averaging
about 60k a week. I am just about over having an injury related to
hamstrings and a groin pull. I  have attended physio and am back to my
former training pace  but after about ten minutes my calves begin to
get very tight and heavy. I can stop and stretch them the same as I do
before the run (leaning against a pole with one leg bent and the one
stretched straight back) and I am able  continue to run usually for
another 40 minutes with no tightness but occasionally it will get
tight every  2.5 k. Is this the body readjusting or am  I lacking some
chemical. The tightness is a general sort of feeling and is primarily
in the middle of the calf. I am now back to running about 55minutes at
about a 8 to 9 min pace and feel generally strong except for the
calves. I run two days and take one off. thanks for any help. If you
can email as well as post I would appreciate as my server misses a lot
of posts

HELP FOR TIGHT CALVES

Post by Dan Sh » Wed, 23 Jul 1997 04:00:00

Hi,
I experience this problem generally the day after a long run.
It usually disappears as my run moves along.  The best precautionary
measures that have worked thus far are:

Stretch before and after my runs

Take a hot bath and soak my legs for an hour, massaging the
        muscles

        Ibuprofen (my last resort)

You may just need a rest though.
I think rest is one of the most important aspects of training.
I just wish I could learn to take more rest.  I tend to overtrain
alot.
Best of luck and keep on running!
