I have experienced this problem exactly for the past year.  I thought maybe
I hyper-extended the back of the knee and have had several tests
done: x-rays, MRI, bone scanning, and no doctor can tell me for sure what is
the problem.  I have been taking anti-inflamatory medicine which does help,
but I still have trouble squatting, kneeling, over a 90 degree bend, trying
to walk after sitting awhile.  I thought I was just getting old and worn
from years of running, age 38...15yrs on the run.  Someone told me they had
the same problem after an injury to the back of the knee, his doctor said it
may take a year to five years before it returns to normal.  I'm not stopping
just slowing down.  Good Luck!

Charles,
Thanks for the shared experience. I tell you I have been going round and
round with this since about June and it started in a pair of addidas torsion
shoes. I might get a little more aggressive with the anti-inflamatories and
ice as well, but it sounds like this just might take some time. I have been
able to run and train fairly decently. Biking doesn't seem to irritate it at
all, so I am going to continue to train for my upcoming participation in the
QUADRUPLE DIPSEA (28.4 miles) and hope that this thing can hold out. Thanks a
ton, it really helps to know someone else out there in the universe has the
same problem. And BTW...I assume you got this off of the rec.running group-I
have been having trouble with my gateway mailer-let me know if you get a
chance. TA!
