Tall and heavy: need shoe rec.

Post by John Pipp » Mon, 31 Aug 1998 04:00:00

I am 6'4" and 270 pounds and am just starting jogging. Right now I go
out in an old pair of Saucony Jazz that are fit for the garbage. Can
someone recommend a suitable shoe for a poor sot such as myself?

thanks, in advance

I wear Brooks ***ion 2...I weigh 210
pounds...and they feel good...They have
the Brooks ***ion 3 out...but I've not
worn them yet....I think the would feel
the same...

I suggest a little cheap foam insert you
can get at most stores for about $1.49 to
go under you regular shoe insert...

You need to find out how much you pronate.   The best way is to go to a good
store that specializes in running shoes and have them diagnose you allthough
you can do some self-diagnosis based on the wear pattern on the sole of your
shoe and the hight of your arch.  There's info on this at
http://SportToday.org/#knowyour
and many other places on the web.

If you overpronate you will probably want to start with on of the motion
control shoes designed for heavy runners like the Adidas Konstant, Asics
MC-Plus, Brooks Beast, or New Balance 586.  Lighter shoes that should also
work include the Adidas Equipment Solution, Asics MC-126, Brooks ***ion,
New balance 990, Nike Equilibrium, Air Zoom Ultra or Air Structure Triax,
and the Soucony Grid Stabil.

If you are very nearly neutral these would still work, but so would a lot of
stability shoes such as the Asics 2030 and Kayano, Puma Cell Temptation or
Cell Endura ans many others.

If you underpronate things get complicated because you need a cusioning shoe
but also need durability.

You can find out a lot more specifics from Runners World
(www.runnersworld.com) and Road Runner Sports (www.roadrunnersports.com)

Hope this helps.

I have brooks beast (220lbs when I started... down to 210 and counting).
Very sturdy shoe.  Cleared up my shin/lower leg pain INSTANTLY.
