marathon training questions - illness and choosing a program

I am planning to run my first marathon in May. I have been running for
2.5 years (this time - I have run in my earlier life) and have done only
two races.

I am now running about 24-30 miles a week, with a third of that a long
run of 8-10 miles. When I looked at the Hal Higdon
(www.halhigdon.com)training guide for novices, I realized it would be a
step down for me to start at that level, but since I have never run a
marathon before I am not confident about using the intermediate training
guide. Any input?

I also can be pretty sure that my kids will come down with something
during my training, so I was thinking of starting early, twenty weeks
before instead of 18, so I can make up the difference. Last year we had
a horrible week of vomitting and I had three full nights with no sleep.
If I miss a week, can I pick up the schedule where I left off?

Donna

Its best to increase your long runs: Jan 10 & 12 miles, Feb 14 & 16 miles,
March 18 & 20 miles, April 22 & 24 miles.  Two weeks apart.
