allergy meds and dehydration

Post by Tom All » Wed, 20 May 1998 04:00:00

I'm running my second marathon this weekend and I've been trying to drink
a lot of water to be well-hydrated for the race.  Unfortunately, spring
allergies just kicked in a few days ago, and I haven't been able to make
it through the day or sleep without taking antihistamines.  These leave me
feeling dehydrated, even after drinking a lot of water.  Anyone else who
suffers from seasonal allergies have any experience/advice in regard to
this problem? Has anyone experienced any any other effects on race
performance after taking these meds (obviously, I am not planning to take
any the day of the race, but in terms of the days leading up to it)?

Thanks,

Tom

Decongestants can speed up the heart and actually
improve performance (marginally) in short distances.
However, they can also lead to dehydration, particularly
on hot days.  And, of course, most of them are technically
banned as "illegal" by USATF, IAAF, etc.
