Channel Islands Trip Report

Three days of diving in the Channel Islands located off the southern CA
coast....... locations included Coches Prietos, Santa Cruz....vis 40ft,
water temp 61F, lots and lots of purple and black sea urchins, misc.
anemones and starfish.  The terrain was rock outcroppings at a depth around
40ft.  Sea lions joined in the fun.  East Fish Camp at Anacapa Island had
the same vis and water temp, deeper depths with lots of reef life.  This is
where we got to play with an octopus until he got tired of us.  The current
was little strong here so, the captain moved us downward to Santa Barbara
Island.  Here we got to dive in kelp beds which are always beautiful.  The
vis was better with a depth of 70-80ft.  Beautiful dive site with lots of
sea hares (must have been breeding time).  Sutile Island was also a
beautiful dive site but the current was riping.  While we were down the
current went from 2 knots to 4...didn't stay down long.  The last dive site
was Skullator at Anacapa where there was very little current, caves, sea
lions, vis 60+ water temp 66F, plenty of reef sharks (including one giving
birth), bat rays, crabs and flounders on a sandy bottom.

It was a great trip which was made better by the livaboard crew.  I cannot
say enough about how fantastic the crew on the Conception (Trurh Aquatics)
was.  Because of a back injury, I enter the water by "rolling" in off of the
dive platform and then take off the BC when exiting.  They were always there
waiting and helping with a great attitude.  One of the crew members even had
some suggestions on how to make it easier for me in the future.  The captain
was very particular on the dive sites....if he felt there was too much
current or if the water wasn't "clean" enough...he moved which is why we
ended up all the way down at Santa Barbara Island.  Of all the boat
operations we have been on this one leaves the rest in the dust.  And if you
ever get a chance to dive the Channel Islands....it's a must do dive.

Is this recent? (This is the kind of thing I like to stick in my notes.)

...sounds like a great dive.

That's the current temps around the Channel Islands (at least it was
when I was out there 2 weeks ago).  If its significantly different when
I go out tomorrow, I'll let you know.  ;-)
