Yucatan: Best dive sites and caverns near Playa del Carmen?

I'm traveling to Playa and points south with a non-diver friend.  In
the course of a 10-day trip I'd like to go on 2 or 3 2-tank dives.  What
site(s) should I not miss? If I want to dive off Cozumel, but am not
staying over night on the island, would I do better to (1) go with a
dive operator out of Playa; or (2) make it a day trip, take the ferry
over to Coz, and dive with an operator located on Coz?

Also, where are  the best cavern diving and snorkeling sites on the
mainland?  I''ve heard of many, but am particularly interested in one I
heard of that allows extensive penetration of a partially air-filled
cave that is part of the "Nahoch Nachich" (sp?) system.

Go to Cozumel on the ferry, the fast one if possible.  If you are
experienced, find B&B Divers in town.  Cheto (co-owner) will
NOT disapoint.  Go over the day before you want to dive and meet
Cheto and see what his plans are.  He's got one of these little 6-pack
boats with twin 85's.  You'll be the last to leave the dock and the first
to get wet.

My son and I dove with him three times last summer.  It was epic.
This guy's a real refreshing change from all those cattle car boats.
This ain't for the faint of heart. On a planned 90ft drift dive, one
diver expressed her fear at going below 40ft.  Cheto says, "don't
worry, you'll do it, it's easy".  She starts shaking her head no at about
50ft during the decsent, so rather than frustrate the other three divers,
he grabs her by the hand and tows her the whole dive.  Plan your
dive, dive your plan, right?

I almost forgot, if you get as far South as Xcalak, the southernmost port
of entry in Mexico, you'll find cheap day trips into some Belize cavern
diving.

have fun

I only made two cenote dives at Dos Ojos, but it was a great
experience.  It is south of PDC not too far from the Tulum ruins..

The ferry is cheap and starts early.   This may be a current schedule:

You may need to check with your desired dive operator to check on
scheduling a dive.  Try this site for several:

http://www.sfn.saskatoon.sk.ca/~af943/diver.html

I cannot give you individual shop policies on payment, C-Card
checking, etc so email them beforehand and arrange something. It may
be that you can get there in the morning, go to a shop and take care
of the details and still make a two - three tank dive the same day.
Email is fast and cheap to verify their requirements and how your
schedule fits.
