Diving in Thailand - Koh Samui or Koh Tao

Post by Raine » Sun, 21 Mar 1999 04:00:00

Hi there,

we're planning a trip to Koh Samui and/or Koh Tao, starting 03-Apr-99.

Any recommendations regarding
- scuba operators (more experienced diving trips and a PADI course for
my girlfriend)
- locations (and accomodation)

????

Any tips are welcome..
Thanx, Rainer

Lucy people

I went to Koh Tao alst year and WISH I could go back this time.

I recommend planet Scuba, really great instructors, I did my O.W there
and the group only included one other person who was my travelling
companion!!

The price was really cheap too-about 70 for the O.W.

As for advanced diving i am not too sure as it was my first trip but
we did get to dive with a 12m Whale shark on our last day and even the
"experienced" divers seemed dead e***d about this.  There were about
5 sightings when we were there for about 9 days!

On a lst note the dive sights are far nearer to Koh Tao, so unless you
like long boat rides i'd miss Samui!!

Have good time and have a plate of No name shrimp for me!!

Emma

Accomodation-I would have to recommend sairee cottages prety basic but
clean I suppose it depends what you want, realy nice family runs them
and they are located next to one of the Planet Scuba Offices so you
can get a free lift to the dive boat.

Koh tao is  a lot smaller and less spolit than Koh samui so if that is
what you are looking for then go for it.

I havent been there myself, but after what Ive heard from friends, Ko
Samui is not very good for diving and Ko Tao is among the best on the Thai
east coast.

Thanks for the tips.
after reading through some websites ans NGs as well as books I assume we'll

spend most of the time on Koh Tao and a little lesss on Koh Samui.

According to my readings Koh Tao dove have some more advanced as well as
deeper
sites (up to 40m), like some of the pinnacles.

70 sounds very reasonable for a course.

Basic but clean accomodation is probably what I'm looking for - no need to
spend 5* prices in SE Asia at all.

Thanx again, Rainer
