It was fine. I had no complaints/problems with the gear I got.
The scuba diving is quite nice there, but it can get a bit
crowded at the popular spots. There are also nice
options for snorkeling as well.

We used Ban's Diving located at Had Sai Ree (about 1-2km north of the
port). They have a nice and large diving boat, and their divemasters
(in case you want one to show you around) are pretty competent
(hint: ask for Veronika).

Ban has nice bungalows on the beach. My girlfriend took a diving course as
well, so we got it for 200 B/night. I guess you should be able to get one for
2-300. The food in the restaurant at Ban's is a bit dull though,(if you're
looking for good Thai food, that is), but there are plenty of decent
restaurants within a 5 min walk.

Have a nice trip

Try Scuba Junction on Sairee beach. Kevin and Nicky maintain their
equipment very well, run well planned dives EARLIER than the other shops
so that you never get a crowded dive site, and their staff aim to
please! This is the shop for people who want to be treated like Royalty
without having to pay extra for that sort of service.

Right next to Scuba Junction is Sairee Cottages. Good prices and a GREAT
restaurant with a 5 page menu! VEry convienient for early dive trips!
You can find these two places north of the dock about a 5 minute walk on
the main path out of the village. Please tell Kevin and Nicki that
"Steve from Japan" send his regards, and will be back to vist soon!

Sorry, but although I dive with them often, I haven't been there in the
past two years, and the baht has changed quite a bit since then.
However, almost all of the shops on Koh Tao charge the same rates. They
compete on service instead. Kevin of Scuba Junction always asks his
customers "What would you like to see changed to make your diving with
us more enjoyable?" He really listens to his customers and makes EVERY
change that he can possibly make and still stay in business. I've been
after him for years to provide the PADI Ice diving speciality course,
but he just can't seem to control the weather there in southern
Thailand......

Try  the ones in the South, e.g. Carabao or whichever is open now
Accomo should be no problem during off-season. Youll get better prices
in connection with diving, so *do* mention it! Almost each Dive-Shop has
connection to Bungalow resorts!

Enjoy!!

Diving at Koh Tao, Thailand

i dove with ban's on koh tao in december 97.  good equipment, nice boat, well
run although our divemaster was in training and did a poor job planning the
dive.  we were all advanced divers so it wasn't a big deal.  the divemasters
with the not as experienced divers were all well qualified.  i just looked at
my credit card statement charge for US$36 which i believe included 2 nights
accomodation, 1 dive and all gear.  would have stayed longer but my traveling
companion came down with a weird eye infection so we had to leave.  the
accomodation was basic (2 beds in a room, communal toilet/shower) but good
enough.
