Help needed with artifact preservation

Post by Mike Zimmerm » Sun, 04 Sep 1994 04:16:46

I'm looking for some advice on preserving some musket
pieces I was lucky enough to find.  I've read through
a chapter in Gentile's wreck book series on what to
do, but I am a little stuck since the piece I have
is composed of brass AND steel AND wood.  So the
acid for the brass is out (I think) b/c it will damage
the other two components.  A lye solution is recommended for
the steel, but I am not sure what that will do to
the brass and wood.  My preference is to save the
brass first, the wood and steel are a toss-up since
both are rather deteriorated anyway.  Gotta get the
growth off somehow.... for now I have 'em soaking in
fresh water, with some brass-only pieces cleaning up
in the muriatic acid solution....

Thanks,
Mike

I've used vinegar for artifact cleaning, but I've not salvaged steel or wood,
just brass & glass (I'm pretty sure the vinegar is ok for silver as well).

Mike,
Read about your problem on the internet.  I do a bit of artifact restoration
myself.  Give me a call: (908) 776-6261.
