Definitely take the 45-minute ferry to Cozumel where most of the
good diving can be found. On the coast side, drive down south to
Akumal and dive with the turtles. Also, do try a "cenote" or cave
dive. This is a fresh-water dive though there may be a mixture
of salt water and you may experience a halocline, where your vision
get blurred and you either have to go below the halocline for salt
water, or above the halocline for fresh water. The cenote dives
are awesome and there aren't too many places where you can do them,
so I'm told, but the Mayan Riviera is definitely one of them.

I dived with The Abyss. http://www.abyssdiveshop.com/ Found them to be very
nice and safe. You MUST try the Cenotes.
For ocean diving there are several great places. E.x. Tortuga, but you'll
just as well take a day trip to Cozomel.
