Ambergris Caye - Trip Report

Trip - Report Corona Del Mar - Nov. 8- - Nov. 17th.

Just returned from 10 days in Ambergris Caye, Belize

There where six of us, 4 divers 2 beach bums-:)

-Took AA from JFK to Miami to Belize City to Ambergris Caye. The last
leg took about 25 mins. While waiting in departure area Belize City, had
several beers at Jet's Cafe, little man with great sense of humor.

I picked up bottle of vodka duty free in Miami..

very long day. The first day everything looks dreary since your so
tired; day by day you begin to say, nice place to vacation.

-Bags arrived safely
-Taxi to hotel four of us ; cost $4, for 4 of us, did i say this is a
small town -:)

- Hotel/condo/apt has 8 rooms, we stayed in apt/condo overlooking the
water.
This is first place in 12 years of traveling that the water was East of
hotel. This is because reef blocks Caribbean and associated waves.
Continental breakfast was included in price.

-First thing we checked dive prices and operators in lobby. Price
started 2 tank dives $60, including taxes, We told hotel we would check
other places, price came down to $50. We decided to walk the beach and
check. We decided on Barefoot divers $45 for two tank dive including
taxes(i.e., slow season). They picked us up everyday at Corona Del Mar's
dock. We never had more than 6 divers on the boat.  More about diving
later.

-Friday night we were tired so we stopped at Ramon's barbecue. Ramon's
was closest to Corona. We were hungry, but I don't think food was that
good, ate all of it anyway and had 2 Belkins.Wanted to get to bed as
soon as I could.

Corona Del Mar was a decent place., The only swimming is  off the dock
(75') from shore. Because of turtle grass and shallow water. View in the
morning is spectacular (i.e., every morning), very relaxing once you get
into the groove. This is probably true for every hotel, no swimming from
shore.

I saw advantages and dis-advantages of most hotel/condo on Ambergris
caye.
Too close to town and alot of foot traffic and noise, too far than you
need car cart for week or you eat at one place. North side of town
across rope ferry and you
you can forget about going to town for dinner.

We rented golf cart one day and toured the island)-:)  Had lunch north
side at
Capricorn, great time.

Ate twice at Jerry's crab house(close and reasonably), twice at Blue
Water grill
, medium price great view , good food., once at Jambel's, hot food( a
few
***roaches' but they don't bother you-:), once at Celi's, once had
pizza delivered.

I thought the food was good, and the people very friendly. they work
hard for their
money.

Diving, great operation, dive master Adolfo led we followed. after first
dive, we
always met him down about 50' . Saw at least 8 nurse sharks, in fact one
dive we drop down 50 ' and 2 are swimming directly under us. They are
very graceful swimmers. There is no problem because we "always dive
after lunch". Saw at least 5 Eagle rays, numerous groupers, the diving
is peaceful, c***and gorges. very relaxing.

Friends of ours took a mainland jungle tour and had a great time. Next
time I might
try the blue hole, didn't want to go on 2+2 hour boat ride.(i.e., i've
been to 130' before) i prefer the majestic c***at 50-75'.

If you like diving or want to relax then Belize will make you happy.

Fred

Did you get a coaster?

funny little place.  Now I'm 3 weeks away from my 5th visit and I've rented
an apartment there.

But what did you think of the Corona?  I wasn't sure that you'd like it
there as much as you might have liked some other places.

Pretty nice, eh?

Hmm, only decent you say.  Not exactly a high approval rating.  Where do you
think you would stay next trip?

And the view is great from every place that faces the ocean too. Yeah, it's
a shame about the swimming but I guess it's not that much of a hardship to
walk out onto a dock and leap in.

:^0  Get out!! I've never seen any***roaches anywhere in San Pedro, though
I was sure they existed. Where in Jambel's did you see them?  Not on your
plate, I hope.

Does that mean that you were happy?  Was everyone in your group?

And thanks, Fred, for not making me wait too long.  :^)  When are you going
back?

Did think of getting a coaster, next time!
Corona was nice, we had a balcony, great for breakfast and lunch. approx. 1/2
mile
to town. Walking the beach was good for us, eating and drinking.
I thought maya princess looked great at night, problem maybe Fido's don't know
when they quit. Not a problem for you, if your there when they close-:)

The Belizean Reef looked good, we would have stayed there if they budged on
price. The seven seas is a good location, i believe is near the park, north side
of town. C***Bay Villa's were 100 yards south of Corona, they looked nice.
-:) I don't know where i would stay next time -:)

Some of the days is was just 4 of us and divemaster, that's luxury -:) One
dive he had 3 newbies, we were down on the bottom for ten minutes before he
got them down. We took pictures and followed back 10-15 yards, 40 mins later
everyone went up. Glad we got in 55mins that dive.

The***roaches were at next table, they must of had reservations, they flew in
for the night?:)

Didn't get a chance to drink the panty rippers, mainly rum probably 180%?
Did split a chocolate *** for dessert at Blue Water Grill. It was pretty
funny , i recreated the scene from "When Harry met Sally" only this time is
was fred, it was funny or we had 1 too many-:)

Everyone had a great time.

No, it's not a problem for me.  :^)  However, they close at midnight I
think.  I never actually noticed the music when I was in my room anyway,
even earlier.  Some people have complained though.  I think it might just be
the suites on the south side of the Mayan that would suffer. Every room I've
stayed in was either in the middle or on the north end.

Funny they wouldn't.  It's not yet high season and they had a grim autumn.

My apartment is right around the corner from the Seven Seas.  It's a good
location for sure and great price for a place with a pool.  I had
reservations there last year but my friend talked me into switching to the
Mayan.  I'm still not too sure how I feel about that but the Mayan was much
more convenient to Amigo's del Mar and it was nice being that close to the
shop and as I've said before they are really nice suites too at the Mayan.
I'm going to check out the actual rooms in a bunch of these places that I
haven't seen yet before I come home next time.

LOL,  but it sounds like there will be a next time.  You didn't do any Atoll
dives, Fred? That's a shame.

Gad, that is terrible.  No wonder you only ate there once.  For myself, I
find the jerked food too spicy so I always just eat the lobster and I have
Fitz tell the cook *not* to jerk it for me.  The best lobster meals I have
ever had anywhere on the island have been at Jambel's.  That was after I
learned about asking them not to jerk it.  LOL.  The first and only time I
ate the jerked lobster there, I was half in the bag too.  Woo, everyone had
a good laugh at my expense.  I couldn't come close to finishing it.  Hot,
hot, hot.

No, I don't think they are that potent.  It is just coconut rum and
pineapple juice.

LOL!! A bit of both no doubt.

I'm very pleased for you guys.

Ambergris Caye - Trip Report

Post by Mike » Fri, 29 Nov 2002 10:11:32

Hi Fred & Chilly, my wife and I stayed at Mayan Princess (a condotel) in
September and nearly had the place to ourselves (due to time of year).
$888/week included local flights (Mayan Air) and taxi. It was our first time
in Belize and -long story short- we plan to return in April, and again, and
again. The condotel and room were very clean and convenient to everything
(we dove with Amigos Del Mar). The kitchen in the room was great! -saved
some money on breakfast, but the food is so good in town we went out anyway
to sample around town. I had Jambles jerk chicken and *MAN* it was *HOT*.
Almost as hot as the weather in September. We also met Jet at the airport
and he sure was a funny and accommodating guy!  I highly recommend his
***y Mary's as a prelude to the return flight, as they really soften the
blow of leaving Ambergris. Didn't see*** roaches, saw Blue Hole and dozens
of sharks, ate great food, Lighthouse reef diving was the best (Turneffe
next time), met some great UK people and had a blast. Mike.

:^) :^)  Glad you had a good time.  I do most of my dives with Amigos too.

I was also glad to see you say good things about Jambel's  (well, I'm
assuming HOT meant good), now that Fred has seen the***roach there.
Myself, I will still eat there up on the rooftop patio and have drinks at
the bar with Fitz, the owner.  I will be keeping an eye out for roaches
though.  ;^)
