FYI- A local dive shop UP here gets $250 PLUS $30 for the OW book. The $280.00
includes EVERYTHING (mask, fins, snorkel, weight ect...) in fact, when
you ask him about his course, he will give you the above info. and
tell you to only bring your swimsuit (optional _B-) ) and a pencil.
I hope this helps and have FUN...   _B-)
BTW.... This is a PADI cert.

Does the $280 include the *purchase* or *rental* of mask, fins, snorkel,
boots, and gloves?

There are shops down here that will throw in rentals for the cost of
the open water.  Miserable gear, designed to make you realize that
you've made a mistake by failing to purchase top quality gear :-).

Frankly, I can't imagine going out and getting certified without
buying at least mask, fins, and snorkel.  After all, I'm going to go
snorkeling, I hope, or I'm just not serious.  And at those places you
can rent gear in the tropics, it is pretty much junk.
