Amergris Caye, Belize : Trip Report

My wife and I recently spent several days diving on Ambergris Caye.
It was a side trip for us since we were really only going there to visit
friends who are teaching at a school in San Pedro. But one look at the
beautiful water...and we had to dive.    We went out with the dive
operators at Ramon's Village. This is a great dive operation. Good yet
small boats, good equipment, and most important, good dive masters. Our
favorite dive master was 'Socorro'. Any one who goes here should try to
dive with him.        Once in the water, we were amazed !!    As wall
divers most of our lives, we could not get over the canyon c***
formations that make up the reef off of San Pedro. Indescribibly beautiful
and all in pristine condition.  On one dive we counted more different
types of c***than ever before...and it is all living and thriving
despite the development in San Pedro. Because of all the fishermen that
live topside, we didn't see many big fish, but there are lots of small
parrot fish, jacks, barracuda, and an occassional turtle.
The visibility was 85'+ vertical as well as horizontal. Water temp. 80
to 85.      On land there is lots of action. Good restaurants, good bars
and a variety of hotels to fit every pocketbook.  It is very casual and
most people go barefoot day and night....except for the local kids who
wear the universal uniform of high top sneakers, untied (MTV has arrived
in San Pedro).      Overall, Ambergris is a place to go if you want good
diving and lots of activity.    Anyone who needs some more info can
email me.
