Hi out there!
Gonna visit Koh Samui and Koh Tao for 3 weeks from July the 27th.  Anybody
out there with experiences (good or bad) regarding the local dive operators?
And perhaps some tips on local accomodations as well?

Best regards from
Dag Deberitz, T?nsberg, Vestfold County, Norway,
- that wil leave his Viking *** drysuit at home ;o)

May I recommend that you do a Google search.  You will find a font of info
on Koh Tao.  Steve Kramer and I have both discussed Koh Tao at length
numerous times and Steve has also talked about Koh Samui.  The dive sites
out of Koh Samui are generally the same sites that are dived out of Koh Tao,
however, you have to travel further to get to them.

I very much enjoyed my stay on Koh Tao but didn't think much of the diving
overall.  I posted a trip report in October or November, 2001.  It is in 3
parts.  If you are interested I can email it to you.

You can get some pretty inexpensive acco if you are diving with the operator
associated with the acco.  For myself, I wanted a bit more upscale and so I
stayed at Sunset Buri which is not associated with an operator.  I still got
a pretty good deal and was very happy with the resort overall.  I dove with
New Way who were just up the road and Ban's boats, but I think I would have
been reasonably happy with Scuba Junction too.

You really should do the google search though.  You will learn a lot.

Hi chilly,
sth seems to be wrong with your email adress. So I considered it worth
getting my mailbox even more spammed in the future and signed up for
this newsgroup.
The reason: I enjoyed your trip report to the land of "happy happy",
but unfortunately part 2 seems to have been lost in innerspace.

Would you be so kind and send it to me?

Bulla!

P.S. I am seriously planning to do my instructors course on ko tao in
jan/feb 2003. even if the diving doesn't seem to be worldclass it
seems to be a great place to hang out and make up for all the
studying

Bans seems like the place to do it with, especially since they throw
in 2 weeks of free diving beforehand. btw has anybody ever used their
underwater vessel or whats it called? how will the weather be like in
jan/feb?
any advice is appreciated...

I learnt to dive at Bans 3 years ago and it was a fantastic place for
the chilled out social life...

I was there for the whole of April and it was 'just' coming into the
rainy season we had a couple of tropical storms but they passed quickly,
but left the water pretty churned up. Apart from that the whether was
great, so I presume Jan/Feb would be better.

The diving on the other hand was not so good, not exactly bad, but I
have had better dives in Mexico/Red Sea and even Spain...but as you say
the rest makes up for it...

Overall, I would definatley consider going back, although it sounds like
it has become a lot more commercialised since I was there...I'm thinking
of heading to Bans to get more dive experience (firstly) and perhaps do
my Rescue/DM, but I might try and head down to Malaysia or the
Philippines if it's got too bad...

Cheers,

Sass

PS. No idea about the underwater vessel, it must be new (or maybe I was
    too drunk to remember?:D )
