Gary Sewell's Response to rec.scuba Group

Post by Gary Sewel » Wed, 17 Nov 1999 04:00:00

After my first and only posting to this group, I would like to first say
that I'm am sorry for my lack of understanding of this groups by-laws.
Before I posted my last message, I checked with a large ISP, where I have
friends working, and was told that SPAM was any off topic material directed
at a large number of groups. Also I was told that non-moderated groups were
open to post relevant information of commercial and non-commercial nature. I
guess it turns out that in this group, by posting our sales information last
week, that that is not true. At no time did I see any reference to any
guidelines on posting or even who 'owns' this group. I am sorry that my
posting started the flood of other posts here and upset anyone. That was not
my intent.  I have been taught a lesson on this groups policies and
procedures, and will not post any further items about out store or products.
Please except our apologies.

Probably could have been taken care of with a simple email, but I'm sure they
reported you to your ISP and tried to make all kinds of hell for you..

I, for one, accept it.  It's rare that someone who spams a group bothers to
be so polite.   If you'd like to stick around for some good scuba
discussions (there are a few here), you're welcome to do so.  BTW, I believe
including your businesses name, e-mail address and/or web site is acceptable
provided you don't over do it.

Thanks for the apology. Its refreshing to find someone who made a mistake,
fessed up, and then apologized. Put your website, store name, and a short blurb
in a 4 line signature and become a contributing member of the group. You'll be
*amazed* at how much good word of mouth advertising you can get.

Gary,

It's a good idea to read teh FAQ of any group befor eyou post.  What
you did was not spam (an often misused term).  Instead, you posted
something of a commercial nature, an adverti***t, which goes against
the overall desires of this group.  It wasn;t spam, it was a
commercial ad.  They just don;t like either one here,
