Thanksgiving week Skydiving (long but all skydiving)

Post by Flyin H » Fri, 05 Dec 1997 04:00:00

I was visiting the In-laws for turkey day and got in a few dives at
Raeford Skydiving.  On Tuesday i arrived via friend transportation, the
last friend left on Bragg.  Go out there and met the JM for a level 5
Jump.  We had to hurry to make the Twin Otter load with a bunch of Army
guys.  We got are own pass.  Good exit and turns had a floating chest
mount alt. I was able to check it twice no problem on the third attempt
i rushed it and rolled over. I corrected myself instatly no problem.
Pull series good, passed my level.  I was only able to get in one jump
because my friend had to go.

On Wednsday i went back with my mother In-law's car for a level 6 jump.
We went up in the Cessna 182 to 10k.  This time i had a wrist & chest
Alt.  This was my pre-secondary 182 jump.  I had a good climb out and
exit.  I took some time checking the wrist alt. because it was also a
pre-second time.  I did a good back loop but ran out of time before a
got to the tracking.  Pull series was good.  This is when the fun
starts.  The wind had picked up after take off and there was no way i
was going to make it back to the airport for landing.  I watched my Jm
make it back as i was looking for an alternate place to land.  Some of
you may know the place.  There are trees everywhere.  I found a field
that looked soft from 2k that was surronded on 3 sides by trees and the
other side was soy beans that did not look soft.  I had to avoid rolls
of whatever was in the field but landed fine.  That last thing i heard
from the radio was "we can't see where your landing so keep you feet &
knees together and good luck".  They were nice enough to come pick me
up.  During my debreif the JM said he thought his chute was going to
collapse due to the *** winds and that he was not going back up.
The the pilot came in and said about the same thing.

I had a lot of pre-seconds that week and had a great time.  All the
people out there were friendly & fun.  That is the same DZ that the
Golden Knight jump at.  They have their own team room at the DZ.  It's
also Known as Gene Paul's Place.  The Jumps were half the price as my
home DZ as well.  I only wish i had the chance for a few mor jumps.

I know this post is a bit wordy but i bashed no one and wrote about
skydiving.

Blue skies and short winters

Jason,

How about following up with a Raeford URL (if there is one) along with
a brief outline of where it is (anybody else?).  It sounds interesting,
and since it's around (in?) Fort Bragg, I'm guessing it's in NC.
Whereabouts in the state is it?  I'm moving to SC in a couple of weeks,
if it's close enough, maybe I'll go there.  Btw, do they let civillians
jump there?

Thanks,
Andrew

Andrew,

Raeford is a small town 15 min. from Fort Bragg.  They do not have a web
site for the drop zone but they do for the gear shop and it is
www.skykat.com.  It is a public drop zone used by the military.  I found
them at the uspa web site and called before my trip to setup my skydive.
There might be closer DZ to S.C. but the all depends on were your moving
to.  The DZ has been there for 17 years i think.  Fort Bragg is about
1.5 hrs for the S.C. border.  Check out www.uspa.org for the DZ list.

Blue skies & light winds
