Relative Newbie - Help buying a new bike and....

Here's the deal.  I want a bike that will be used on the road and paved trails.
I have always preferred the riding position of a road bike and this past year
began riding alot, at least for me, over this past summer and fall (50 miles or
so /week - avg.  65-70 at the most).  I did all my riding on a bike that was
purchased for me off the rack many years ago.  I enjoyed it so much that I would
like to treat myself to a new bike.  I am aggressive even when
'relaxing'...chasing down the next rider on the bike path or simply challenging
myself to turn in a better time on my rider than my previous best.  I am
considering getting involved in some racing strictly for the competition but
have no idea how to start.  I'm sure that at this moment I would fit into some
lower division and that's fine with me.  I don't aim to be the best, just in the
competition.

Any advice on a 'entry level' road bike (I know that's kind of an oxymoron) and
where I should go from here?

Thanks in advance!
