Armand De Las Cuevas crashed in the 3rd stage of the Quatre Jours de
Dunkerque yesterday (May 4), breaking a collar bone. Despite brave words
from Armand about being able to ride the Giro d'Italia, which starts on May
13, "because the first week is not too hard", his doctor thinks it unlikely
this will be possible. De Las Cuevas finished last year's Giro in ninth place.

L'Equipe reports today (May 9) that Armand De Las Cuevas -- who is not
renowned as an early riser -- called his director-sportif Bernard
Quillen at 8am Saturday from hospital to request a bike and home
trainer. He had a session on the rollers only 24 hours after an
operation under general anaesthetic to fix his fractured collar bone. He left the hospital
Sunday, still with hopes of starting the Giro Saturday.

L'Equipe reports today (May 12) that Armand De Las Cuevas will
definitely lead the Castorama team in the Giro d'Italia, which starts
tomorrow. Yesterday in Perugia, where the Giro will start, he made his first
venture onto the road since his accident, a two-hour ride, but he has also
put in 12 hours on the rollers. "If I get through the first 48 hours Ok,
I'll be allright," he said
