i want to make decision for the following two bikes: trek navigator 100
(2004) or diamondback sorrento(2003). the spec for them are:

                trek navigator 100              diamondback sorrento
price(CDN)      $450                                            $400
type            comfort                                 mtn
frame           Alpha aluminum                          ATB 6061 OS Aluminum
fork            RST CT COM I C4                         SR XC-50,Alloy Crown/Alloy Lower
wheel           Alloy hubs; Matrix 550 rims     Alloy
SHIFTERS   SRAM ESP 3.0                         Shimano ST-EF29
F.DERAILLEUR  Shimano C051                      Shimano C051
R.DERAILLEUR  SRAM ESP 3.0                      Shima Altus
brakes          Alloy linear                            Alloy Linear

i got above spec from their web site. my main use is to tour, exercise and
commute (not quite often). sb told me to better have shimano gear and
shift. I don't quite understand the difference between their spec, but i
want to be sure the quality of the bike and component are good.

could somebody give me a recommendation???

thank you very much

If it's gonna be outside, get SS spokes. You probably would do
better with a hard tail, like a trek 4500, also about $450-60,
with 750 rims, better shifters, better deraileurs, and frame is
better (SL alpha aluminum). A trek 4300, at almost 100 bucks
cheaper is even slightly better than the Navigator, IMO.

I'm a newbie, so seek other opinions, and I'll look on too. ;-)

thank you.

but the price i listed is canadian dollar. i checked with the store.
4300 is $520 canadian dollar. 4100 is $450 canadian dollar and 4500 should
be more expensive than 4300.

OK, sorry if I missed that. Wouldn't you normally put US prices
or a CAN next to the figure, though? ;-)

The 4100 is still better rear deraileurs, better cassette, better
frame (SL), SS spokes.

Just asking, but why the comfort model?

After a test ride, which do you like better?

Which shop treats you better?

Buy that one.

There is nothing in the specs that would make one necessarily better
than the other. Ride the bikes. Not just around the parking lot, but
out where you would normally ride them. Buy whichever you like best.
