Temporary Horse Registration

Temporary Horse Registration

Post by Sharon.. » Wed, 17 Oct 2012 04:11:58

I recently bought a young miniature horse stallion with papers.  He's
really sweet and lovable, and makes a great pet.  My question is that he
is registered to the "American Miniature Horse Registry".  On the paper,
it says it's a "Temporary Certificate of Registration", and it also says
"Certificate not valid after 12/31/2012".

I've never owned a registered horse, so I know nothing about "papers".
While I do intend to get his papers changed to my name, I'm curious what
would happen if I did not register him before the end of the year?
Would that mean that he is no longer able to be registered?  And why are
these papers "Temporary"?  I find this puzzling.

While I dont intend to use him for breeding purposes right now, I might
consider it in the future, particularly if I buy a mini mare, so I know
it's to my advantage to register him.  If he was a gelding, I'd probably
not bother, since I mostly just bought him for a pet.  I get more use
out of my large horses, to ride, but these little ones are more fun than
dogs, and can come in the house too.

There is no standardization among registries, each one operates
according to its own rules.  You will need to contact this registry to
see what this temporary business is all about.  I've never heard of
anything like this in any of the registries I'm familiar with.

AMHR papers are "temporary" until a certain age because the critters
being papered can be one of three classes, depending on how tall they
end up getting. The "temporary" registration is basically a "This
(hopefully itty bitty) horse was born on dd/mm/yyyy, sire is ____, dam
is _____, this is what we're calling it, we don't yet know what class
it'll end up being when it finishes growing" statement. Later,
"permanent", papers (issued at age 3, IIRC) for the critter will include
its height-based class.

Thanks for the info.
You're right on the money what you said about what is on the papers.
He turned age 3 in July, and now measures 29 and a half inches.  His
color has not changed, as he is pure black except for a star on his
forehead.

I wanted to ask on here because their website was not helpful in this
manner.  I intend to contact them and get his registration changed into
my name soon, and definately before the end of the year.  Not to mention
the cost to transfer increases if not done in _x_ amount of months.

This is the first "papered" horse I've owned, and being a stallion makes
him worth registering.  I dont intend to geld him, particularly because
he is so gentle, well conformed, and pretty.

He was funny when I walked him near our Pintabian mare, and he reared
up.  His head was around chest level on me.  I guess he knows what he
is....
After a good laugh, I told him "she's too big for you" :)
(I swear the mare was laughing her ass off too).
