Blu's skin graft an early success!

Post by Jorene Dow » Sun, 15 Feb 1998 04:00:00

For those of you who have been following the tale of Blu's leg
injury since December 1, I have just put up new pix and info on
Blu's "skin graft" page. (slow loading, lots of pix)

In brief ... Doc Jamie had anticipated 4 weeks before we'd have an
idea of how well the graft took. Today - after only 3 weeks - we
could already see tiny hair emerging!!! Looks as if a good 75% of
the grafts took, instead of the expected 50%, so the next phase of
skin grafts should be much easier. <huge grin>

And yes, Blu got a few hours of turnout. And this time I had the
camera handy to capture her exuberance ... not quite the rodeo she
performed during her last turnout prior to the skin grafting, but
she had a grand time out on the small pasture!  LOL!

What geat news, Jorene!  And my compliments on your terrific web page
(which wasn't all that slow to load, BTW).  May she continue her
remarkable progress!

Wow!  What incredible change in such a short time!  Having confronted
neighbors about loose dogs repeatedly, I can imagine the feeling of
finding your horse in the state the first photos show...How wonderful to
see the improvement....

One of the things I've seen done for areas that need covering is to cut
small slits in the surrounding skin in a staggered pattern (like brick
laying) to permit the skin to be stretched over the area, and have only
the small cuts to heal....would this work for a horse?

Don't know if you get to other newsgroups -- specifically rec.pets.dogs
(several of these) have been running items about Nadas, a mixed-breed
dog in Oregon who was "condemned" to death for chasing a horse.  Appeals
were made for people to write and demand Nadas' life be spared.  Maybe
they'd change their minds if they saw what the results can be. . . .

>How's her bucket holding up? ;-)

<G> Blu is still beating up that empty red bucket, convinced that if
she rattles it around enough I'll put something in it. So I gave her
a few chunks of salt block so the bucket could rattle better when
she played with it! Not quite the treat she wanted ... :)))

Doc Jamie is due again in the morning to check Blu's progress. Her
ranch calls are doing double duty these days since we also have
mares we're bringing into season and others ready to breed.
Saturday we did an AI on a lease palomino mare. Blu, Magic and Daily
should be coming in the first of next week for AI / shipped ***.
We've been doing a live cover on a foal heat for Britches ... and I
finally got up a pix of her gorgeous black (we think!) colt on
http://SportToday.org/;    Pretty Girl should tease
in for a live cover in the next few days. (Her '98 colt is on
http://SportToday.org/)  Same sire ... and it
looks as if the young stallion's owners may have made a mistake
cutting him before the first foal crop hit the ground. Both foals
are *very* nicely put together ... but lacking color ... but we have
a few more to deliver from this sire (red dun Mr Robin Boy overo
grandson) so maybe we'll get lucky with the others.  ;-/

The distraction helps stop me from thinking about Blondie turning up
open ... must have absorbed her foal ... I'm bummed because that
would have been a 1/2 sibling to Blu with 50% chance of being
palomino. <sigh> But Blondie showed strong in season when teased
yesterday, so we'll try breeding her once more ... keeping our
fingers crossed with an older mare ... :-/

My cousin visiting from New Zealand has had a rather, er,
interesting visit. San Francisco managed one day of gorgeous blue
skies before we returned here. A non-horse person, he's fit right in
to our horse-oriented life, helping with feeding, watching green
horses in training when weather allowed, etc.  Jumped him right into
our life style, though ... mere hours after he arrived here we were
in center aisle doing a live cover ... :)))

And like Corinne when she visited, he has been rather surprised by
the miles and miles of dairy farms, cattle ranches, orange groves,
etc. in serious agriculture country  - "Are you sure we're in
California???"  -  and is quick to fix the fresh squeezed OJ in the
mornings! ;)

We're *quite* pleased with the progress, but we're not out of the
woods yet. So far there is no sign of any impairment in Blu's
movement, but as that skin grows back in if it doesn't align quite
right there is still the potential to get a mild hitch in her "git
along" ... which might mean her very promising career as a
competitive Trail horse would end before it started. That would be
really disappointing, but meanwhile I'm ecstatic that she *will* be
rideable. At age 2 1/2 she was more solid on the trail than many
mature horses I've ridden, so if nothing else I'll still have the
reliable ride that we selectively bred for to replace my [now
retired] gelding.

Sounds like a reasonable idea if there is sufficient moisture to
prevent the skin from drying out. Might have helped in our original
situation when the skin flap didn't hold the stitches, but I suspect
the type of injury would be a big factor, and this injury I think
would have been too deep.  But I'm just guessing.  Any comments from
the vets?
