Hello,
At the barn that I board there are two mixtures of sweet feed that we can
choose from. One is a 14% protein and one is a 12% protein. The percentage of
protein is the main difference in the sweet feed. This is in addition to hay
ration and any individual supplements that the horses are on.
This is mainly a dressage stable and most of the horses are show horses. The
ones that are in training are usually worked 30-45 mins/day for 5-6 days a
week.
What would be the benifit to feeding one sweet feed (12 or 14%) over the
other? Would feeding the 14% have any benifit in being able to decrease the
amount of grain feed or contribute any extra energy to the horse? Which might
allow better weight gain or weight maintence for the horses? What is the
optimum protein percentage that should be fed? What are the pro's and con's to
other health issues resulting from 12 or 14% protein in the horses diet?
Thanks for any help.
Wendy
