Question regarding importing horses from Europe

Question regarding importing horses from Europe

Post by ANDREA LARSO » Sat, 11 Nov 2000 04:00:00

I am going to be making a trip to Germany with my trainer in March of next
year to purchase a horse.  I plan to have the horse shipped back to the US
and I am wondering if anyone else on this newsgroup has done this.  I have a
few questions.  What the process was like?  What, if any, issues arose?  I'd
appreciate any advice from someone who has "been there, done that".

Thanks in advance
Randi

Question regarding importing horses from Europe

I haven't imported a horse myself but a lady at my barn just imported an Irish
Sporthorse.  She didn't have any problems except that it took forever.  It had
to be quarantened in Canada and the ship date kept getting delayed for unknown
reasons.  She has had him here about a month now and he has settled in
excellently!

Also, another horse at our barn (a 17yr old hanoverian) foundered when he came
over real bad about 10 years ago.  He is OK now but they don't really know why
he foundered (stress maybe?).

Question regarding importing horses from Europe

Check with your federal/state veterinarian's office. The last time that I
was involved with importation of horses from Germany, they were required to
be quarantined for CEM (Contagious Equine Metritis) regardless of the breed.
Also, they had to have negative titers for piroplasmosis. Check the
requirements first to be on the safe side and to potentially save money and
heartache.
