I hope someone else can provide some creative alternatives.
It must be really hard to put a good buddy down. But around
here we can go to the vet. You haul the horse in and she
just gives him a shot. Puts him to sleep. No pain no fear.
She disposes of the body too. I think costs run less than $100
dollars.

That's almost what we had done with my daughter's wonderful little
Shetland pony, 26+ years old, in constant pain due to foundering and
left with a hoof resection as the only untried treatment.  Having a
very understanding vet, he came and picked up the pony with his trailer
while we were gone for the weekend and took her back to the clinic
himself.  It made a difficult situation somewhat easier for our
family...
