Buying a Court's Saddle: Any opinions???

Buying a Court's Saddle: Any opinions???

Post by Shelley Sniti » Sat, 14 Feb 1998 04:00:00

I am looking to buy a saddle...again!   :P   I found a new Court's
western saddle at the local feed store but I have never heard anything
good or bad about the Court's brand.  Anyone have any opinions or
experience with the brand???  This is not one of the Sharon Camarillo
saddles made by Court's.  It lists for $795 but the store owner said
he would sell it for $650.

I will use the saddle for backcountry, all-day use so it has to FIT
and LAST!  This one has full bars.  I have a wide-backed QH.  Of
course, I will get a trial period to try it on my horse but, if anyone
can tell me about the general quality and durability of Court's
saddles, I'd appreciate it!

TIA for any advice,
Shelley

Hi Shelley,

I am familiar with Court's saddles. They *can* and do make a mighty
fine saddle. However, I have found that the lower priced models are
not worth owning. However, their higher priced saddles are quite
nice. Sounds like you have stumbled upon one of their lower priced
models. I know that as a team roper, I am not interested in riding
their "budget variety" of rope saddle. Number one, they're really ugly,
and two, they don't seem to be made as well as the higher priced version.

Well, you might get along with it ok, I don't know. Just be sure
to tip it upside down, look at all the stitching underneath the panels
and under the jockeys and all that. Be sure it's Hermann Oak leather
or an equivalent. If it isn't, I might go ahead and pass it up.
There are lots of good makers out there who build a good saddle
in that price range:
Billy Cook, Tex Tan/Hereford, Simco, American, Circle Y
to name just a few. So be careful not to get hung up just because
the price is in your budget.

Hope this helps.
