My point is, I understood your concern with veterinary bills. Most horse
people spend more money annually on farrier bills than veterinary bills.
I was simply trying to get everyone to step back and see the "forest"
rather than just a "tree". Farriers, veterinarians, feed mills, hay
growers, boarding facilities, trainers, etc. are all part of the expemse
equation. Veterinarians, in general, are actually a small part of it. It
often appears that horse people look upon veterinarians as a major
expense. Unless there is a major problem to correct, this is not the
case.

I don't know your clients or prices, of course, but I must say I've
never begrudged a penny I spent on vet and farrier costs. My ponies
get a lot more check-ups and health care than I do!

Well, I consider myself a very knowledgeable horse person and I spend
more at the vet than I do with my shoer. At $20/trim x every 7 weeks =
a whopping $148. I can spend that in one visit with the vet! My yearly
vet expenses, including worming every 60 days, shots every 60 days (we
are on the road alot) cost more than my yearly farrier expenses

To be honest, I'd forgotten just what this was all about. I suspect it
has something to do with Mr. Jerry and not having the farrier cause
problems that the vet has to fix...

Your personal problems are not generally germane.

In what way do you establish that the horses you
bring into existence will not be discarded as
useless the way so many currently are?

On the whole, I spend more on the farrier--but then my mares are trimmed
every four weeks (one grows fast; the other, with her twisted legs, needs
to be kept very short.)  With few exceptions, the vet comes out twice a
year at most, sometimes only for the spring shot series.  (Not showing,
so horses get shots only once a year, maybe twice if there are problems
in the area; horses get daily wormer, and I can do the paste worming
spring and fall.)  So t*** is a little over $500/year, and vet care
is under $300.  That doesn't count the cost of the daily wormer, of
course (but though the vet recommended it, I handle it, and count it as
part of normal maintenance...which reminds me, I should be on the way to
the feed store even at this moment...)
