I found one of those in the garbage the other day. Took it apart, dusted it
out, added memory, formated Hard drive and isntalled XP loaded games and
gave it to my 2 year old. Nothing but Blues Clues, SPongebob, and Dora!
he's in heaven.

Just a guess, but probably because they fear the headphone portion
malfunctioning...and not being able to just buy some more headphones.
