When I first heard of the new PKI coaster, I thought wow! But, after
thinking about it, I really don't think coaster enthusiasts show get
their hopes up. The reason can be summed up in a question.
What mega woody ever built has not gone through some reprofiling and
additional breaks? The answer none! Is there any mega woody that does
not have breaks on the first drop?
The simple fact is, in my opinion, wood is just not suitable for mega
coasters. All mega wooden coasters have gotten too rough and management
has had to slow them down. Either they don't know how to maintain them,
or they won't maintain them, or they are impossible to keep smooth.
Just look at what's happened to Hercules, Mean Streak, Rattler, even the
Texas Giant. The same thing will happen to Son of Beast. Just look at
the original Beast with all the breaks. The history is there. Why
would things be any different now. It's inevitable folks.
Don't get me wrong. I LOVE mega coasters. I LOVE huge drops. And when
the above mentioned mega woodies opened I LOVED their drops. I think
Hercules had the best drop ever on a wooden coaster. But, I think parks
should leave the mega coasters to steel.
