i wouldn't say Indefinitely, that sounds so bad :) lol.
it really sucks because on my local news they showed all these pissed off
people " I came here from michigan for this, i want my money back" type of
thing. i think they say the cable is on order. the old one has already been
removed. it should be up in time for Millennium Mania.

well, after the news showed the pissed off people, they went on to give an
opinion about the safety of rides, figures..damn staistics.

...because at a Six Flags park it would almost definately be down for the
season. (ala Big Dipper at SF:WoA last year)
Now, I usually focus on the coasters and such while I'm at CP, but in all the
times I've been there (around 7 or 8 times), I've never noticed a ride being
down for a significant amount of time.
Magnum's chain broke a while ago, and CP maintenance quickly worked to get it
back up and if I remember right, did.

Cheers,
Nick

Pure garbage. SROS at SFNE lost a chain last year and was down less than 2
weeks.

What happened to the skate? Did it slide backward down the hill? Which cable
broke, the primary or the tension cable?

Were the opinions about the safety of rides a positive one? You would think
so. From what it sounds like, MF's Anti-rollback system worked. Thus safety
measures were working great. There were no injuries (mentioned) and everyone
got off fine? Isn't this a positive thing when discussing safety in rides?

Okay, and I quote:

"What happened to the skate? Did it silde backward down the hill?"

Channel 7 WHDH in Boston ran the story about MF on their news at 4pm , they
said it got stranded on the hill. The news footage showed the coaster train
stuck on the lift hill. By the looks of the footage , MF had already been
evacuated of the people before the news crews arrived.

It also looked like it was sitting on the anti roll backs like the coaster
is designed to do.

MF's lift cable breaks (9/2)

It seems like the 'skate' would have some type of safety catch on it (like
an anti-rollback device) so it doesn't fly backwards down the hill and "hit"
at the bottom by the station.

Maybe. I could see something being activated by a tension on the draw cable
that would retract a friction brake, but that's a fair bit of mechanism to
put into something that looks so simple.

There's an S-shaped undercurve at the back end of the loading station that
leads to an open bottom that would suggest the skate meerly shoots out the
bottom and slides along the gravel under the unload station.
