preliminary results of woodie poll (after 1 week, 26 ballots)

Post by Mitch Hawke » Wed, 06 Nov 1996 04:00:00

This is a shameless attempt to entice more people to
participate.  I received 25 ballots in the first three days and only
1 ballot in the last four days.  Remember that these are only
PRELIMINARY results as I expect at least 72 people to take the poll
(that many have taken it in each of the last two years) and so far
only 26 have taken it.  I will repost the ballot right after this
post.

Total Number of Ballots = 26

preliminary results of woodie poll (after 1 week, 26 ballots)

Post by Richard Bonn » Fri, 08 Nov 1996 04:00:00

***   Hi Mitch,

Could you please explain the abbreviations in the column headings
below? I also don't understand exactly how your rankings were achieved,
even after reading the instructuions. Can you explain this some more?

That aside there is a clue in these initial results of this pole that
tells I've likely voted. Can anyone figure it out?

preliminary results of woodie poll (after 1 week, 26 ballots)

Post by David Hamburg » Sat, 09 Nov 1996 04:00:00

I'll tackle this, so Mitch can work on the actual poll.
I wouldn't go into such detail, but I figure that if more people
understand this, then they'll be more likely to vote!

As with ANY poll, the trouble is with coming up with a way of
weighting votes so that all items have an equal chance.  With
coasters, this is particularly difficult, since location has a LOT to
do with whether a ride gets a lot of votes.  If you only took a direct
count of votes, then a mediocre coaster than LOTS of people have
ridden would get more points than a GREAT one that only a few people
have ridden.  And if you take only the top 10, then a quite good
coaster that almost everyone agrees belongs somewhere around 11-15
wouldn't get listed at all!  After all, ONE #10 vote would be worth
more than 100 #11 votes (not votes at all.)  One solution would be to
have people give a numerical grade to each coaster, but the value of
say a 7 would vary so much from person to person that the value would
be meaningless.  If only people who hadn't ridden a lot of great
coasters have ridden a particular one, then they might consider it
MUCH better, and give it a higher grade than it deserves.

So, the BEST way to do this (even if it takes longer) is to have
people rank ALL of the coasters that they have ridden.  Mitch's
program then assigns one head-to-head (or wood-to-wood <G>) challenge
for each pair of coasters on your list, and assigns a winner and a
loser, or two ties.

So, let's use me, for example:  Here are a few of my listings of the
20 woodies I've ridden:
Cyclone             Astroland            NY y y 1
Great White         Wild Wheels Pier     NJ y y 2
Big Dipper          Geauga Lake          OH y y 9
Beastie             Kings Island         OH y y 20
Since the Cyclone is #1, it beats the other 19 coasters on the list
and gets 19 wins added to the tally.
Great White, at #2, beats all coasters on my list, except the Cyclone,
so it gets 18 wins and one loss.
Big Dipper gets 11 wins and 8 losses.
Beastie gets 19 losses.
Equally ranked coasters get counted as 1 tie for each coaster, plus
points for all of the others that the beat or lose to.
These all get added to everyone else's totals and converted to a
percentage of wins (like in sports) to come up with the final list.

The big advantage to this is that rides that only a few people have
ridden have just as much chance as the ones most people have, if
they're actually worthy.  For example, the UK woodies, which some of
our British friends are VERY proud of could come near the top, even
with only a few riders, if most of them put it near the top.
Also, the rankings of people who have ridden MANY woodies counts for
more, since they had more competition.  While this may seem
undemocratic, it makes complete sense.  If a coaster is on top a
persons list of 60 woodies, it DESERVES more points than a coaster on
top of a person's list of 3 woodies!  It should be noted, however,
that when a coaster gets VERY few people ranking it (<5), then the
real value gets REALLY skewed, perhaps more than it deserves.  Note
Megaobia at #1 below with only ONE voter!  Perhaps it deserves it, but
we'll know better when more people have voted on it!

Perhaps, this solution doesn't tackle everything and isn't perfect,
but it seems the best way to get a fair tally.

DID THIS MAKE SENSE???

As to whether you've voted, you've only done so if you sent the list
to Mitch with all of the coasters you've ridden and your ratings.

So, do it NOW, everyone!!!

***   Great. I get it now. I do agree though, that some coasters with few
riders will show skewed results.

So the abbreviations below are for "Location, Wins, Losses, Ties
Winning Percentage and Tie-Breakers". Is that right?

How can MegaFobia be #1 with one "1" rider?!?

This is very true - I ( and many of my friends here on the newsgroup) have
ridden many coasters in the UK and the US but still rate Megafobia and the
Grand National as being  some of the best ( I think the best , but some
have different opinions). Therefore what rating do you give our opinions
as to someone else in the UK who loves 'Fobia and the Nash but has no
comparisons as they have never left the country ?

I am really proud that Megafobia is currently top of the list - and I hope
it stays there. Of the many people I know who have exerienced a lot of US
coasters and the Welsh Wonder - Megafobia is still the best - but how long
will it last ? The new CCI woodies are on their way - watch this space !

: How can MegaFobia be #1 with one "1" rider?!?

I am assuming because he just listed the whole list of rides that got
votes...my suggestion for the "final" list is to have any coaster with
less than a minimum of some sort (say 5 or 10 riders) be listed as an
addendum, that is not counted in the official final poll.

I did not see Richard's original post but I will try to answer all
the questions I have seen asked about the poll here.

David Hamburger had it mostly right about the algorithm.  The one point
I would clarify is that the Wins, Losses, and Ties are not assigned
based on each ballot individually, but rather due to all ballots
cumulatively.  Each ballot gives an "over", "under", or "same" for
each coaster the person marked as ridden relative to each other
coaster that person marked as ridden.  For example, if a person
marked forty coasters as ridden, then each of those 40 would be given
an "over", "under" or "same" relative to each of the other 39 marked
as ridden. It is the cumulative amount of "over"'s, "under"'s, and
"same"'s, between two coasters that determine whether a Win, Loss, or
Tie is awarded to each.  For example, last I checked there had been
nine people who had ridden BOTH Raven and the G.E. Comet who have
taken the poll. Of those 9: 7 ranked comet higher, 1 ranked Raven
higher, and 1 ranked them equal.  Therefore the Comet is credited
with 1 Win and Raven with 1 Loss.  This is repeated between each
pair of coasters and then when all Wins, Losses, and Ties have been
assigned, a winning percentage is determined for each coaster and
the coasters are ranked based on winning percentage.  Ties are broken
by head to head preference if possible...e.g. if Comet and Raven ended
up with an identical WinPct at this point, the tie would be decided in
favor of Comet as it won the head to head matchup by a 7-1-1 score.
On a related note, my program also outputs a spreadsheet with
124 x 124 cells with a W,L, or T in each cell and the score.  This is
interesting to look at if you want more detailed information on the
poll.  I will try to make this available for download from the World
of Coasters website (Jim Serio permitting) agin this year. Last year's
is available there...I won't send to individuals as it is >50k zipped.

The column headings should now be understandable based on the above
explanation.

To answer someone else's question about how Megafobia could be #1
with only one rider: It can't in the FINAL results as I would have
replaced the RANK with a * indicating it had fewer than 3 riders take
the poll.  Megafobia now has 5 riders who have taken the poll and it
is still ranked #1.  In fact all 5 ranked it #1 although one person
coranked Grand National as #1.
I hope my explanation above on how the poll works helps people
understand how Megafobia could have the highest WinPct and hence the
highest ranking based on only one rider.

I hope I answered most of the questions, (and triggered more, no doubt)

: >***   Great. I get it now. I do agree though, that some coasters with few

: I am interested to know what you mean by skewed.  I submit that less ridden
: coasters will much more likely than not be rated closer to the true
: sentiment of their riders than by any other method.  It should not matter
: how many people have ridden a coaster in a poll that attempts to find
: which coaster is the most highly regarded by those who HAVE RIDDEN it.

***   Well, as I see it (which may stil be wrong if I am not understanding
this correctly), number one on the preliminary list has a winning
percentage of 1.00 (100%). If that person is the only one to ride that
coaster it will still stay at that winning percentage. The only hope for
any other coaster is for 100 percent of riders on any other given coaster
to rate it at number one, thus tying "Megaphobia".

That would be the "1" rider of the long way from everywhere, Tree
Topper.
