Blue Streak Rolls Again! + BSB Roll Call

Post by Todd Lo » Sun, 04 May 1997 04:00:00

I called the Campground at Conneaut Lake Park today to get a sight for
the Blue Streak Bash (not that I won't be able to stay up all night) and
the nice lady who answered the phone told me the Blue Streak was running
for the first time since the restoration. She said "It sounds so good
running again." Looks like they will be ready for us.
She said the campground had plenty of spots left for that weekend but
had heard the hotel was almost booked. That confirms Dana Schwartz
posted earlier. The campground takes tents also and is just across the
street so that looks to be the place to stay at this point. If you need
the phone # write me and I'll get it to you. (left it at work)
I guess its about time to start the official RRC Event Roll Call. I'll
be there as part of Air On Line Tour with Adam Revesz, Lee Schulz and
David Sanborg. We and a few others will be hitting KW on Friday,
Waldameer Sat day, BSB of course, Geauga Lake Sunday and CP on Monday. I
hope to hit Chippewa Lake on the way back to Pitts. if time allows. (Yes
I know its closed) I'll hit Camden Park and Carowinds on the way back to
FL if I'm not running behind and they are open those days.

See ya on Blue Streak!    Todd Long

Well, I'll be at the Blue Streak Bash too...  Might make it to Waldameer
on Sat., but can't guarantee that (I'll be visiting family in the area
on Fri. and Sat.).  In any event, I'll see you all at Conneaut - can't wait!

Roll call!

As Todd has alluded to my earlier post (in re the Hotel Conneaut), you
all know that the mysterious Dooley (:-) and I will be there!  We also
plan to start out from NJ early enough on Saturday to get to Waldemeer
for a bit (anyone:  please let us know approximate arrival times so we
can plan our driving time to Erie better).

Then down to Conneaut Lake (naps? maybe!) before the BSB!  BTW, that
nice woman at the Hotel Conneaut told me that we all have a late check
out time (very much welcomed!).  Although, if Steel Force opens by
that weekend, Dooley and I will be hightailing it to Allentown to
catch a couple rides (what can I say?  we're insatiable... kinda like
sex in the early days... who said that?!?  ;-)

Gosh, I hope the name tags for BSB are in LARGE PRINT!  If not, don't
be surprised if some 5' tall woman starts squinting at your tag to see
if she *knows* you!

I will be there. I cannot wait. This is really insane. I am going to ,
without a doubt, last the entire event. I know I will be VERY tired at
the end but I think that it will be very worth it. I am going with
fellow acer's Chris Trotter,Jim Mitchel, Bradley Flora, and myself. If
any of you see us, come over and say hello. I have been to events with
ERT before, like Coaster Celebration in St. Louis where I hit Batman 108
times in 2 days, but I  can't even imagine what this is going to be
like. One question. Who has ridden it before. I have heard good things
about it but really don't know a whole lot about the ride. I have read
about it in Guide To Ride but that really doesn' t tell me what I want
to know. Mabey I will just wait until I ride so I can appreciate it
more. See You There !  Less than 2 weeks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I rode it about 15 times on a visit in 1994 -- that's the only time I've
been to Conneaut Lake Park.  The train (only one at that time) consisted of
4 three-bench NAD cars, rebuilt in-house.  The only restraints were a
single non-ratcheting lapbar, with no seatbelts or seat dividers.  The back
seat of each car had headrests.  (Now that I think of it, it was a lot like
the train on Americana's Screechin' Eagle.)

Before the lift hill, there's a decent tunnel.  After the lift hill, there
are three drops that are GREAT in the back seat.  (This is DEFINITELY a
back seat coaster!)  The return trip after the turnaround was pretty tame,
in my opinion.  You can see two of my POV photos on the Elvis FTP archive:

  ftp://elvis.rowan.edu/pub/coasters/Images/Conneaut_Lake/bluepov2.jpg

See you at the Bash -- I'll be the one shouting, "Single rider for the back
seat!"  :-)

Count me in too, for the Blue Streak Bash!  But my pre- and post-bash
itinerary will rotate in the opposite sense as Mr. Long's...a couple of
Michigan & PA ACE friends and I will be doing CP on thursday and friday,
maybe Waldameer briefly on saturday, and then CLP.  Post-bash...I'm doing
KW on monday (I think Jason from the CP Blue Streak also said something
about meeting me dahn there), and looking at the schedule, I think I can
fit in a trip to PCanada's Wonderland on wednesday or thursday.  After a
wedding in Erie, another trip to CP on Memorial Day!

Yup, I'll be there.  But I should mention that I probably won't be at
Waldameer, and will only able to make it to Kennywood very late.  If I
get too far behind on Friday, I may not even make it there at all.  I
will be on the rest of the AIR tour and looking forward to it!

I'm really e***d about the Bash.  I think it's a great idea!  I don't
know if I'll be able to last the whole night (do you think they'll be
supplying caffeinated drinks?), but I fully intend to be riding as dawn
breaks!

Count me in for the Kennywood Day on Monday, I am off that day due to my work
schedule.  Plus, I only live across the river from KW!

Well, I don't know if caffeinated drinks are going to be "on the
house" at BSB, but MikeL45 (who I've been in correspondence with
recently - he's been working with Rich Koppelman on the preparations)
has informed me that there will be a refreshment stand open all night.

He also told me about the Blue Streak "banquet" - sounds like the
folks at CLP are going out of their way to make this event special
(yeah, we're paying for it in our admission, but it appears that a lot
of planning has gone into this event).  There's a place that will open
for breakfast right around dawn as well (the name escapes me -
something with "Cabin" in it; perhaps the hotel restaurant?  It's been
a zillion years since I've been to Conneaut; I vaguely remember the
old hotel, forgive me).

Should I bring a case of Johnny Java caffeinated water for us :-) ???
Wakes me right up - says it has the same amount of caffeine (per
serving) as a cup of coffee.  Then I read the nutritional labeling:
servings per bottle is 2 1/2 - no wonder you get a jolt!

Sorry for drifting off topic.  Can't wait for BSB!!!
