I took a fairly spur of the moment trip to Coney Island earlier today
with a longtime friend Liz. We arrived close to 2 and there were no
spots in sight in the immediate area. Ended up parking not too far
away on a metered space along the street on Mermaid Ave. Only about a
2 block walk and we were by Nathans.
So the new part of Scream Zone is opening May 25 according to the
signs and the skycoaster is up and also they were putting up the
entrance sign as we walked by. Normally I'd think there's no way this
area can be open by the 25th but theyve certainly done some miracle
type work the past 2 years.
It was too chilly really for beach weather, but there were some people
on the beach and definitely a good number if people on the boardwalk
and in general for a pre Memorial Day chilly Saturday. We ended up
riding the Steeplechase (which I had ridden last year). Only a one
cycle wait, we ended up in front row. Very fun ride. I'm still pretty
impressed with this installation.
We then rode the Ghost Hole, the dark ride at 12th Ave Amu***ts. I
had only ridden this once, and it was about 10 years ago or so. I
remember it being not as terrible as it could have been, and still
feel that it's okay. It starts off kinda ehh but definitely gets
better as the ride goes on. This ride was 6 dollars. Oh, and the
animatronic puking man out front is a little different than most other
Our final ride of the day was of course the Cyclone. Arrived at the
station just after a train had dispatched so we were the 2nd group to
line up on the platform to wait and chose our favorite seat- the 2nd
to last. The ride has definitely improved since last year- the first
drop is very noticeably smoother and more comfortable, while the rest
of the ride is only slightly smoother and still feels more like it's
old self. The new sections have not yet been painted white (the whole
first drop and some bits and pieces here and there).
After walking around a bit (gotta love the signage at the El Dorado
Bumper Cars), we then ate at Nathans which was more crowded than it is
when I've gone in the summer. They do an amazing business there.
Not bad for a visit in under 2 hours!
