Should Vekoma use the term SLC?

Should Vekoma use the term SLC?

Post by Andy » Wed, 25 Aug 1999 04:00:00

After riding on the new Vekoma SLC at Southport UK and seeing the
discussions on suspended Vs inverted coasters I realised that the
coaster is actually inverted.

Presumably a coaster has to be able to freely 'swing' to be called
suspended.

So shouldn't they be Inverted Looping Coasters?

Suspended Looping Coaster is the term Vekoma uses to describe that model of
roller coaster.  Simply because B&M calls coasters which suspend riders from an
overhead track in ski lift-style chairs "inverted" doesn't mean that Vekoma has
to call similar coasters "inverted."  Vekoma has chosen to call what most
people automatically think of as "inverted"  coasters "suspended."  Also, all
of Vekoma's SLCs have basically the same layout, so SLC basically refers the
the model/layout of the coaster (I think, but I may be wrong).

Actually, it means Suspended Looping Chris... but then again, I am a legend
in my own mind...

Well, I believe in B&M's case, they chose the term "inverted" to refer to
the track design
as compared to a standard coaster's track, while in Vekoma's case
"suspended" refers to
the position of the trains relative to the track.  YES, I know B&M's trains
are also
"suspended" underneath, but the trains themselves do not hang in an inverted
position except
when in an inversion.

No, the car can freely swing, if you take off those hydraulic rams/shock
absorbers on each side of the cars center pole.  If you take those off, it
would swing just like an Arrow suspended.  So techinally they are suspended, so
Vekoma has the right to call them suspended looping coasters, also at the time
the SLC was released, I believe Inverted was patented to B&M.
