Say Bye-Bye to BGT's Monorail

Post by SLChri » Sat, 15 May 1999 04:00:00

There was an article in today's Tampa Tribune that said BGT is dismantling
their monorail.  This was news to me, even though I knew the monorail had
been closed for several months.  They listed needing room for other
attractions, expensive maintenance, and the lack of readily-available parts
as reasons for the removal.

Sad to see it go, but I never really liked the monorail at BGT anyhow.

Say Bye-Bye to BGT's Monorail

When I was at Busch Gardens' Tampa earlier this month, it appeared from the map
that a good part of the safari area was only visible from the monorail.  I
didn't have time to ride the train, and I was sad to see the monorail closed.
I would hate to see that area of Busch Gardens basically closed because the
monorail is closed.  Busch Gardens' Tampa is one of the top four zoos in the
country, and what good are having the animals if there is no way for people to
see them???  A sad day indeed.

Agreed that it's sad the monorail is going.  But...If there is only one other
mean of transporting guests to see the animals, and  that is by train...They
mine-as-well take out the animals...Know what could go in the area? =)

-Steve, who appreciates the animals, and that Busch loves them, but, wouldn't
be too upset if more area was being occupied with coasters than animals...At
his second favorite theme park

Excuse me, I forgot about the skyride.  Oh well, I'd rather ride a skyride to
get good pictures of coasters than animals, anyway. =)

Are there any other "inverted" monorails around other that this one at BGT.
At least we still get a good view of animals, especially zebras, from
Montu's lift hill.

I know my cousin and his wife are 2 folks that went there just to see
the animals since they get motion sick and don't like roller coasters.

Hmmm...I dunno since I never asked.  They went there about 10 years ago
before they had all the big coasters like today and the main attraction
for them were the animals.

There is one in Wuppertal, Germany, and it is used for local transportation.
There was an accident on it a few months ago, and a train fell into a river
below the monorail track.  It is very old and it is practically a historic
monument.  One of the monorail trains somehow derailed, but I haven't heard
anything since the accident.

Why is everyone upset to see the Monorail go?  To me it makes perfect
sense.
Disney just opened up a direct rival to BGT last year.  Ok fine, they had
some prime draw thrillrides.  Dolt, IOA just opened up.  BGT is getting hit
from both ends.  So if they want to keep thier share of the market, they
need to keep up with the Jones.
Removing a Monorail that has admittedly been becoming more costly to keep
is good business sense.  BGT will keep the Serengeti, it will just alter
from its current form.  Edge of Africa is a prime example.  So is the Truck
Safari.  BGT needs to get the people closer to the action.  The Monorail
has always been a bit far from some of the stuff.

This is a sign that BGT is willing to do what ever it takes to remain a
prime draw.  Even being an hour and a half from Orlando.

Of all the times I've been to BGT, that thing was never running.  I always
wanted to check it out.

Oh well.

They just said you could take the train or sky ride, or pay and ride the
truck around.
