1996 Woodie Poll:PRELIMINARY Results (after 3 weeks, 80 ballots)

Post by CROOOO » Fri, 22 Nov 1996 04:00:00

You know, these results still strike me as so odd that MegaFobia can
still be #1 with only 10 people riding it.  Perhaps these are the 10
voters from Europe who only have voted the few woodies there.
I know I experience a similar but oposite experince, being from
California and having not ridden many of the great woodies back east
where it seems the majority of these voters hail from, but all of the
California coasters seem rather LOW on the list.
I can understand PGA's Grizzly being at the bottom. :)
But with the Santa Cruz Boardwalk coaster being #1 from the west coast
followed by Belmont, then SMFF's Psyclone, then to Colossus, I must
admit I'm confused.

Especially when I see that Lagoon's (in Utah) little tiny coaster is
rated higher than Colossus.

I'm curious though...is there a way to tabulate these results again,
puting them in order of # of riders on a coaster, just so we can see
where the largest cluster of riders are comming from.

Perhaps a tabulation by region.  Texas and everything west clumped
together, and everything east together, and then Europe.

Actually, the results have confirmed something I have thought all
along....Mega coasters are generally a waste of wood. Look at these
ratings:
Le Monstre 36
Beast 38
Rattler 61
Mean streak 73
Colossus 79
A. Eagle 83
Hercules 92
Only the Tx Giant is highly rated at 11, and that is a bit high IMHO, it
was very rough this year, almost shook my brains out of my head.

The point being is that mega coasters are usually rough, heavily braked,
and generally not well regarded. It is good to see that my axiom "height
does not make might" is held by the majority of enthusiasts. It look like
the mega woodie fad is over, I say good! keep the record breakers for
steel.

more comments on the results:

Overrated coasters:

Tx Giant
Yankee cannonball (still a fine ride, but a tad high)

Underrated:

Ga Cyclone (this is a great coaster when running well, stand up airtime in
the back)
Wild One (it kicked ***when I rode it in Aug)
Big Dipper Geauga (a true Coaster Classic, great airtime and great trains)
Thunder Run (maybe due to people who rode it when it was rough)
Riverside Cyclone (I hate Morgans too, but 51 is too much of a demotion
for this former top 5)
Judge Roy Scream ( this was very peppy with a fair amount of airtime this year)
Starliner Panama city and Zippin Pippin (these two have some nice airtime
despite the size)
Lake Winnie Cannonball (yes I got married on it so I'm biased, but 48 is
too low, this ride ALWAYS runs well for a small coaster)

Any way, despite these differences of opinion, this is a great poll, by
and large the cream rose to the top...good job Mitch!

Well, I live in California and I voted Megafobia as #1.  Don't forget
there were also over 100 ACErs on the UK trip this year that went on it,
and many of them are online.  And in regards to enthusiasts from the UK,
almost everyone I know has been to America to ride coasters at some point,
and many of them on multiple trips.  In fact, some of the members of RCCGB
have been on more US coasters that I have!  And I travel a hell of a lot!

Just defending my UK pals and thier #1 wooden coaster!

I do not dislike mega woodies as much as you but I do think as a group
they really need help.  None of them are in my top 10 and I find that I
enjoy most of them somewhat but they are, as a group, just lacking
much of what makes many of the midsize woodies great...airtime, and
other things too.  I will say that unfortunately I haven't ridden the Texas
Giant yet, and I wish I could have ridden the 92' Rattler, I heard it was
a great ride the first year!

Matt, I aggree with you 100% these 5, above, are all way underrated IMHO
also!  The top 3 are in my top 10, and many people I know also rate them very
high so I'm at a loss as to why they are "where they are."  I also think the
Predator is WAY underrated.  Despite some strange ratings I still feel that
overall this poll is the most accurate of all polls I've seen because most
polls are really bad, usually just popularity contest with no counting for
quality.  I will say that every coaster in the top 25 is a very good ride!

1996 Woodie Poll:PRELIMINARY Results (after 3 weeks, 80 ballots)

I put a lot of effort into designing a tabulation algorithm that
eliminated the bias towards the more ridden coasters.  All 10 riders
of Megafobia rated it #1 or co-#1. I haven't ridden it, so who am I
to debate it.  I don't think that the Great Escape Comet, which
finished #1 the last two years, ever had all the people who had
ridden it rank it as their #1.  I am glad that my poll allows a
coaster like Megafobia to be #1.

Quote:
> Especially when I see that Lagoon's (in Utah) little tiny coaster is

FYI: of the 8 who have ridden both, 5 preferred RC, 2 preferred C, and
1 didn't differentiate between them.  You evidently have a minority
opinion in this instance.
You had also commented about the relative rankings of west coast
coasters and them being somewhat low.  You forgot to mention the
woodies in Vancouver, Idaho, and Puyallup which rank 4th, 6th and
67th after 82 ballots.

Quote:

You can do this.  Copy the text of the results down from the newsgroup
and edit it, placing a right tab character immediately before the #
riders entry of each line.  Then open it up as a spreadsheet and sort
by the column that has the #riders in it.  I can tell you that the
coasters at Cedar Point, Kennywood, King's Island, and Geauga Lake
have been ridden by the most people but Colossus and some other
Six Flags coasters aren't that far behind.

Quote:

I don't think that is necessary and would only create more ambiguity
in the poll.

Give the SCBB Giant Dipper a try, you may find out why it is the
most highly regarded of the California woodies.

Thanks for your comments,

1996 Woodie Poll:PRELIMINARY Results (after 3 weeks, 80 ballots)

(Replying to two different sets of remarks here...)

Quote:

Actually (if I understand the results and algorithm right), the ten
Megafobia riders have collectively ranked 102 other coasters alongside
of it.  And, for every one of those 102 coasters, Megafobia was the
majority winner in each head-to-head pairing (Megafobia vs. another).

Of course, I doubt that every one of those ten riders has ridden all
102 of the other coasters, so it might be the case that some of those
102 pairwise votes may only have one or two voters.  If that's true,
then there's still a chance that Megafobia may not be #1 when the poll
closes... but that can only happen IF one or two other voters who have
ridden Megafobia (but haven't voted yet) rank one or more of the other
coasters with low pairwise vote counts higher than it.

It's clear that at least one of the Megafobia riders has US coaster
experience, since there's no other way that 102 other coasters could
have shown up on the same ballots as it.  But it's also possible that
the polling could be skewed by just *one* voter with a large track record
who thinks Megafobia is best.  You'd have to look at the raw data -
the ballots of the ten Megafobia riders - to know what the full story is.

And maybe, just maybe, Megafobia really IS that good.  I'd love to try it
myself - there's a POV video available of it somewhere on the Web (wish
I had the URL handy!) which has me convinced that it *could* very well
be worth its top billing.

I'm not confused by it - in fact I fully agree with it.  I've ridden all
of California's woodies except Psyclone (which wasn't open during my one-
and-only trip to SFMM in March of this year), and IMO the Giant Dippers
are far and away the best woodies CA has to offer (in fact, I think both
should be higher in the overall poll than #22 and #32).  Colossus?  It
may be big, but after the first drop it's a series of wide slow turns
and shallow ramps (instead of steep hills) that aren't particularly fast
or interesting.  And just at the point where it feels like the ride may
be starting to pick up speed, WHAM! - the mid-course trim slams you to
a near-stop.  Compare this with rides like the Great Escape Comet, the
Raven or the Hershey Wildcat, or either of the Giant Dippers for that
matter, which deliver the goods all the way through the ride, from chain
release to final brake run - the Colossus of today isn't even close to that.
(The day I rode Colossus, I was with someone who rode the *original*
Colossus - his description of it back then makes me wish I could've tried
it back then too.)

I think I mostly agree with that sentiment... I do agree with the low
rankings of Colossus (#79) and Hercules (#92), though my own rankings
put Hercules slightly ahead of Colossus.  On the other hand, I don't think
Mean Streak is *that* bad to deserve a #73 rank, and I do respectfully
disagree with Matt on the Texas Giant (it's in my top tier).  But my
own MS and TG experiences are limited to a single day each, and I could
easily see how those coasters could be ranked lower on a "bad hair day",
when they're running rough.  Wooden coasters do have good and bad days,
and it wouldn't surprise me that the bigger they are, the more the variance
is between "good" and "bad".  (I can't help but wonder if a mega-woodie
with a steel frame - ala Great White or Hoosier Hurricane - might not
help solve the roughness/maintenance problems that the megas tend to
exhibit.)

Out of curiosity... have you ridden the Yankee Cannonball in the last
year or two?  The YC has improved *a lot* since I first rode it in 1993.
It's been thoroughly retracked, bringing the speed up and with it,
the airtime!  It now has a few airtime spots it didn't have a couple
years ago, thanks to the better trackwork.  Canobie Lake Park deserves
a lot of credit for really getting this coaster back into shape!  (It's
not in my top tier - I rank the Giant Dippers higher than it - but it
isn't too much further behind.  I wish it were just *slightly* taller
and longer...)

I'll have to ride it again (maybe if I get to take that NJ/MD/VA trip
next year...).  My only rides on it were in June 1994, when it desperately
needed more grease...

Quote:
>Big Dipper Geauga (a true Coaster Classic, great airtime and great trains)

Strong agreement on both of these - Thunder Run was MUCH improved this year!
The Big Dipper is at least the best woodie in northern Ohio, which is
saying a lot.  (I haven't been to PKI or Americana yet...)

Quote:
>Riverside Cyclone (I hate Morgans too, but 51 is too much of a demotion

I agree with this.  I wonder if the park overall and its operating procedures
have as much (or more) to do with the RC's low ranking as do the Morgans.
(For that matter, I don't believe the Riverside T-bolt deserves to be as
low as #88 either, though it does have its pokey days...)

Another ride I'd consider underrated is the Dorney Thunderhawk - like
Thunder Run, its ranking may be lower due to past years' performance.
(I only rode it this year; others in the past said it was killed by
mid-course trims, which were either light or not on at all when I rode it.)

Quote:
>Any way, despite these differences of opinion, this is a great poll, by

I'll second that!  I think Mitch's head-to-head algorithm is the best
method for tallying different people's coaster rankings out of any that
I've seen so far.  It may not be perfect, but nothing is...

Just to burst you bubble: I am one of the people who voted for
Megafobia #1, and I have also ridden many U.S. Woodies. Some of them
even got into the very top of my list (the Georgia Cyclone and the

I have not ridden Megafobia, (next year!) but a couple of people with BIG
track records I know rate it # 1....so the ranking is probably pretty
accurate

Of the UK voters to this thread I KNOW FOR A FACT that they would have
ridden many coasters around the world and as such they deem Megafobia to
be number one.

Of the US  voters on the net who have experienced the ride - they have
also voted it very high in their lists

Yes - Megafobia is a long way away. Yes - its in the UK. Yes - many US
coaster riders havent ridden it but those who have - love it. It is
actually very condescending to say that us UK riders have voted it highly
as its all that we know . Its not as if we dont already have some world
class coasters ( Grand NAtional, Big Dipper, Cyclone etc etc) We ARE not
bragging about the ride because its there . We are bragging because its a
***y good ride.

I am not afaid to admit that my favourite steel coaster is Montu and thats
not in my country. To me its just an excuse to travel and ride another
coaster NOT a chance to have a go at a ride I havent done.

I dont mean to complain - but it really annoys me when the best coaster in
the world I have experienced is trashed by people who have no idea.

Actually, that is not what was implied, meaning that UK riders don't
know any better.  Sorry if it came off that way, the statement was
towards the fact that there are so few WODDIES in both the UK region and
the CALIFORNIA region.  So that for the riders that don't have the
oppertunity to travel across the globe, let alone to the east coast,
there isn't a lot of coasters to vote upon.  (This includes myself in
this catagory).

I love coasters, and have riden as many as I could, but living in
California, and not being able to afford the outragious travel fees
the airlines want, it rather limits what there is to ride.
Especially where woodies are concerned.  There are only really 5 of them
in California (I think)  None in the accessable Las Vegas area either.
In California, where STEEL seems to reign king, its rather difficult to
compete I guess.

I wouldn't dream of trashing the Megafobia, though I've never ridden
it.

I haven't ridden MegaFobia, but I met several people at Cedar Point in
August who were on the ACE trip and all said it was the best coaster
they'd ever ridden.  And earlier this month, while in Britain, I spent a
few days at Blackpool Pleasure Beach; again, everyone I talked to who had
ridden it said it was the best.  If it's better than the GRAND NATIONAL,
it must be one helluva ride!  The NATIONAL is #3 on my favorite coaster
list, and I passed the 125 coasters ridden mark during the Europe trip.

I can vouch for everything Mike said.

I have no personal bias since I didn't vote but if I had then Megafobia
would have scored even more points.  I personally find it very difficult
to rate coasters on a 'best' basis because I enjoy so many different
types of ride so I hate scoring one against another when they each have
differing attributes.

So far as Megafobia goes - it IS a first class ride and deserves world
recognition as a virtually 'PERFECT' woodie providing a more intense ride
experience than many mega-coasters costing considerably more to build.
It's also probably the most photogenic coaster I've had the privelidge to
climb around with a camera.  It triggers distant memories of the Belle
Vue Bob's.- motion, constant merry motion.

We are lucky to have had it built in the U.K. by a fortuitous association
of CCI, John Wardley, and the courage and foresight of the family owned
small park.

My personal opinion is that it will be seen as a watershed, the catalyst
in the revival of wooden coaster building, especially twisters, in Europe.

There are other parks in the UK that have the space, and after Megafobia
the inclination, to put in an affordable woodie of this class.

Hopefully in the course of the next couple of years we will be adding
many Megafobia siblings to our list of top world woodies and, selfishly,
I hope that many of them appear here in the U.K.

I can personally vouch for everything that Mike has just said.  I
personally have ridden the majority of what are considered to be the best
coasters in the US (I currently have over 300 under my belt) and I
constantly rate Megafobia better.  As Mike also said, of my American
friends that I know who have been lucky enough to have ridden it, they to
seriously rate it !

The coaster quite simply has everything - massive air time, speed, good
first drop, loads of turns, great PTC trains, great visual's, great staff
!, great location - everything you'd want in a coaster.  Truly my No1 !
(Woodie !!)  I'll NEVER forget the night riding we had on it back in
September - everything was perfect.  Ahhhhhh, roll on April '97.
