KVH Datascope - Unreliable in the long term

KVH Datascope - Unreliable in the long term

My 4 year-old (out of warranty) KVH Datascope began having problems
last year.  The time and range displays are missing segments.
Apparently this is a common problem, and KVH recommends buying a new
instrument.  Does anyone have a similar experience?  I will go back to
my old reliable hand bearing compass rather than shuck out another 400
bucks for an unrepairable gadget that doesn't last.

A recent Practical Sailor commented the same thing - that they thought a 400
dollar instrument should last longer.  KVH gave them the same response -
it's got a 1 year warranty; after that you're SOL
