Newbie to navigation and comms!

Post by John » Tue, 18 Feb 2003 00:15:19

Hi Guys,

Im new to the industry/hobby and I need to learn all about marine
electronics. (electronics I know, 'Marine' I dont). I need to learn about
MF/HF and VHF radio and DSC. Radar, DF, Depth sounders, intercom systems,
laser plotters, path computers GPS and anything else I may have forgotten
about. Basically comms and navigation sums it up, how it all works and how
its all implemented.

Can anyone suggest a good, up to date book on the subject please. I have
found a title called 'The Marine Electrical and Electronics Bible' by John C
Payne which seems to fit the bill, but if anyone knows any better, please
tell me.

Thanks in advance,

John.

The problem with that request lies in the fact that the technology advances
faster than the rate of publication and distribution of books.

As does Electronics in general, whether its computing, digital comms, brown
goods, ..whatever! But there are still books out there on ALL these
subjects. Suggested reading on marine comms and navigation anyone?

Your real best bet, is to go down to the real marine radio shop in the area
(NOT West Marine, the guys who really fix stuff and sell it) and pick their
brains, that's what I always do, and I talk to the service techs as well to see
what has what problems.  I also make my purchases there, it's always worth the
couple extra dollars for the technical support you end up getting when things
don't go perfect.  Sorry, I don't know any texts on it.
