Req: advice/ guidance on wooden runabouts

Post by Hidden » Mon, 29 Sep 1997 04:00:00

Greetings!   I am interested in building a mahogany runabout along the
lines of the old Hacker's and Cris Crafts from 1910 thorugh the '50's.  Am
looking for picture book references, availability of plans, techniques,
insights, troubles, owners...!  In short anything that has to do with
gearing up for, and actually building one of these beautiful boats.

Must admit to date my experience has been in furniture building, a
*** canoe, and a beautiful stipper touring kayak.  I figure 5 years of
my time is probably about right.....

Comments? Insights?   Advice?

Thanks

Will

Will,

Restore one first. you will learn more about how they were built than by
any other means. You will also see a hundred ways to improve on the 50 year
old technology. These will mostly be small improvements, but the sum is
worthwhile.

Second, build one of Nelson Zimmer's beautiful "modern classic' runabouts
from WoodenBoat plans. You will not be having to make it up as you go
along, as the plans are very complete. Reasonably priced also.

You will be aboe to sell each of these for more than you hae in them, not
counting much for your labor, of course. But you can consider the labor
your "tuition". And study lines and drawings every chance you get.

Take the profits and build your dreamboat to your own plans.

Classic Boating is a really good magazine from which to learn. Try to find
a local who has a good collection which you can devour. Buy all of the "The
Real Runabouts" series.

Good luck,
