RC-27 Bill Roberts Catamaran Info

Post by vanderli.. » Thu, 13 Oct 1994 18:24:03

Hi,

we sail a Bill Roberts designed RC-27, a 27ft long, 16ft wide,
500sq.ft. (1184sq.ft w. gennaker) all-carbon-fiber racing catamaran.

We know there are two other RC-27 here in Switzerland, where
we are based, and we have raced against both of them.
Bill Roberts once told us that a total of 11 boats have been
built so far, 6 of which seemed to have been shipped to Europe.

We'd love to find out where the other boats are based. Does anybody
have information about RC-27 catamarans, in Europe or in the U.S?
Where are they based, who owns them, which races have they sailed?
Is anybody aware of any articles that have been written about the boat?

We'd appreciate very, very much any information any of you could provide!
Many thanks!

Claas van der Linde

Hey Claas!

I know there's one sailing out of Galveston, Texas that I ran across
racing in the Fort Walton - Around the Island Race (100 miles).  He was
first to make it to bridge, but instead of heeding local advice and
clearing the center span, tried to cut it short and ended up getting
stuck under the bridge.  The whole fleet sailed past.  A couple of hours
later he caught us though.  We were sailing a modified Nacra 5.8.  I also
sail against Bill Roberts every year at the Mug Race, a 38 mile inland
river race out of Jacksonville, FL. The only time I 'ver seen him get
beat is when Randy Smythe showed up with a new Nacra 6.0 Express and his dog
as crew.  We race a Melges 24 for that one, and normally are within sight
of the big cats all day, given it's not a beat.

Later,

Mike

I hear there's one currently in Corpus Christi (Texas, on the Gulf of
Mexico coast), stored at the city's "Catamaran Park" on North Beach.
You could contact Corpus Christi Multihull Association through :
Jay Strickland, 1026 Driftwood, Corpus Christi, TX 78411

First time I ever heard of an RC27 was when a friend returned from the
1988 US Olympic Sailing Trials Newport, (Rhode Island) and had pictures
of some OSTAR tris and cats, and an RC27, that he had seen up there.
Apparently after the OSTAR finish, and before the Trials, there was a
publicity-type regatta with all the multihulls racing the same course -
60' ocean going tris, Olympic catamarans, and whatever else showed up!

Also, you could try sending a message to the multihull mailing list at
