Doel-Fins???

I fitted one last month on my Mariner 55, I have an 18ft cabin boat which we
fish off. It has made quite a difference to the handling, and it comes up on
plane easier (especially when there are four of us aboard, with kit), and it
then stays up at lower revs.
All in all, I'd say it does what it claims to. As far as the fuel saving
goes, I suppose if you plane at lower revs, then you are bound to be saving!

I put one on my 14' Trophy / 50 hp. It improved the performance at slow
speed and getting up on plane by keeping the bow from rising. However, it
did cut a couple mph off the top end too.

I love mine.  had them on two motors (same boat) and the difference is
amazing to us.  getting on plane is a snap.

Put one on my 20 footer 4.3, planed much quicker, especially with a load,
bought a new 24' cabin model, put one on there too! Wouldn't own a boat
without one!

Wayne,

I have a 24' Concord / 200hp Mariner O/B
which came with a Doel-fin. I took it off last season just to see if it made
any difference in performance, planing, etc. No difference at all. I left it
off. This does not necessarily mean they are useless, just that it made no
difference on my boat whatsoever.

Safe boating,
James

FWIW, I have a Formula F-25SC.  It's a cabin cruiser with a single 5.7L
Merc - not a go-fast by any stretch, and in my particular case, the Doel
fins made an enormous difference.

I had to have my outdrive replaced last year.  The mechanic forgot to
replace the fins, and bow, even at full planing speed, ran a good 6" higher.
They made an even bigger difference before reaching planing speed.

If you will go back over the last months archival postings you will find a lot
of info on Doel fins.  I used one on a 14 foot outboard because I steered it
with a tiller and due to the fact I am not a lightweight the bow of the boat
was sticking up in the air.  It cured the problem and I believe it gave the
boat a little more top speed.  I am launching a new-old boat this Friday with
the same problem and I have mounted a Doel fin and I will let you know how I
make out.

I installed a similar product (Stingray) on a Sea-Ray 20 Laguna Center
Console with a Merc 175.  It let the boat plane out about 4-5 mph slower
than previously and made the boat much more responsive to engine trim
changes.  There was no loss of top speed as the fin was out of the water
anything above 3500 rpm.

I had a real doel-fin on my last boat, it was a great success, planed
quicker and improved acceleration (the usual 2mph off top end though). I
fitted a Lazlas Hydroplane on my current boat and ***is an
understatement. It forced the bow down too far meaning I had to trim the
engine out even when starting. I lost quite a bit off top end speed and
handling turned from nice to horrid as the boat was now riding soley on
the hydroplane, not the stern section of the boat (well thats what it
felt like - there was no control at all at speed).

Was it the boat or was it the fact I used a cheap copy, I *think* it was
the boat but I might try the real ones again sometime...
