Varsity, JV,or Travelball

Do you coaches think it is okay for HS players to play JV instead of
TravelBall (TB)?  Some of my players will certainly make varsity, but
others might not, I'm wondering if I can force them to stay with me if they
only make JV?  Any opinions would be greatly appreciated, especially those
who have crossed this bridge before.

Who are they going to play against?
Most of the travel teams that are highschool age groups are waiting for
the girls to finish up school. There's not many tournaments for those
age groups until highschool softball is over. It's fun to play for your
highschool.Highschool has more fans than at most travel ball
tournaments. When our high school softball team went to the state
playoffs two years ago, getting there we had upwards of 500 of our fans
at the games, the other team had about the same. That is a blast for the
girls. We pulled a few JV players up for the playoffs. If you don't play
how can you get noticed and pulled up.

What Tuff N Nuff was talking about was those 14 year old girls who are
in High School. There are tournaments and games every weekend
in SOCAL for 14&U age groups. So he was asking if they should play
for their freshman team or JV or just stay on his travel team. Last year
I know of quite a few girls who stayed with their travel teams at 14
instead of playing High School Ball. If their varsity was so loaded with talent
that they couldn't make it on Varsity they were not going to get picked up
anyway ( at least I guess that is what they were thinking). It does not hurt
their HS career to not play as a freshman of they are good enough when they
become sophmores. I still think they should play HS though for the social
aspect.

I think it is very important to let them play in High School period. No
matter at what level. It is a social thing that every girl should be
allowed to experiance. Last year one of my players went to a High School
that was loaded with 18&U Gold players returning to the varsity so she had
to play JV.  It didn't hurt her to experiance playing with her classmates
and she still came to practices with us on Sundays when we held them. The
other player made Varsity but sat the bench most of the season. I believ it
is better to at least play then sit. Either way, let them go have some fun,
go watch their games, keep your mouth shut about the HS coaching, and when
she returns she will be a little behind byt raring to go. One other plus is
that all my HS players last year came back appreciating our team more.

How can you stop a girl from playing HS ball? What are you going to do
if she plays, kick her off the team. If a coach told my daughter she
couldn't play HS ball we would be looking for a new team the same day.
Most girls
like playing HS ball, it's like a vacation, no tough coaches, no 3 hour
practices, it's time to relax before the real season starts. Now
sometimes
you get a good HS coach and then your daughter has fun and learns
some new skills.  As a parent it was a great feeling to give my daughter
her varsity jacket with her CIF Championship Patch (bragging dad). As a
coach you should  recommend all of your girls to play HS ball. Remember
it's time off for the coach too.

HS ball must be different where you are. I'm a HS coach in Ohio and we
have 3-hour+ practices every day. We take HS softball seriously, and work
much harder than any travel teams in our area.

Depends on school & coach. At our school you would do better playing
marbles. Worst coach i've ever seen.

Very well said Andy you are the first travel coach that seems to have the girls
best interess in mind.(Imean that you are the first one that openly spoke about
it.)

You've missed the entire question.....obviously if they make Varsity, they
play.....the question was....should they play JV or TB??

Jeff, this is why I'm asking the Q....sometimes even Varsity ball is a
huge step down from TB.  I would still encourage Varsity still under those
miserable softball conditions.......

No I wouldn't kick them off of my team if they chose Var over TB, but
would consider it if they only made JV.  If they made JV, I would wonder
what kind of a player I'm losing???

I just wanted to toss in a few things..my high school coach is a
great coach.  She also coaches summer travel ball, but in a different
age group because of our rules.  We do run 3 hour practices almost, and
we work our butts off.  We do have a lot of fun, but we stay pretty
intense during the season.  Sometimes probably more so than we do during
the summer season since there really aren't any national calibur teams
around here like the ones you guys always are talking about.  Then
again, we also do play spring ball at our high school while most of the
teams from other states in our region have changed to a fall season, so
we come straight off of the High school season into summer.

But I just wanted to mention that my hs coach is probably the best coach
I've ever had in ANY sport and has taught me SO much. I think it's just
going to vary from team to team and high school to high school how the
attitude of coaches are...

Travelball...at least they'll improve during the spring.  ( now I hope
some midwest JV coach doesn't get pissed).  That last year of 14 is a great
year TB...the next year they get the short season anyway.
