is a division  college in mass. allowed to ngive any type of softball

I don;t think any D3 schools that play NCAA can give scholarships.

However, really bright kids who did very well in high school have been known to
get "academic scholarhips" and just happen to also play softball.

No, but they will give you an "outstanding" financial aid package if you are
someone the coach really wants.
