Obviously, everyone on the west coast is ignoring your post and waiting for
Blades to falter before responding.
I saw Blades pitch this spring and her control was amazing. She didn't
seem to have a quality change-up, but in the game I was watching it really
didn't matter.

This is not quite accurate.  In fact, I am on the west coast and made the
original post.  Those of us out here agree that Courtney is almost as good as
the pitchers out here.

She is a good pitcher, no doubt.  However, please note after a perfect game
and all the hoopla, she got roped by Oklahoma for 2 dingers and an ERA of
4.5.

Blades gave up three earned runs in seven innings of work.  I am not
sure how that could be an ERA of 4.5.  I believe the Totalcast stats are
set up for nine innings.

Blades wasn't the only All American to have a bad day.  Graves and Laird
also gave up three earned runs.

Blades has given up 3 earned runs in a total of 14 innings.  That makes her ERA
1.5. ERA = earned runs divided by games pitched. Easiest way to get there is to
multiply runs by 7 and divide by number of innings.  Actually, the easiest way
to get there is to plug the numbers into a computer set up to run a stats
program.  However, what's your point?  I have seen all good pitchers (yes, even
Lisa Fernandez) get lit up occassionally.

I was at the game and Blades left fielder misplayed both balls and helped knock
them out.

<< I think Blades just ran out of juice after
60some games. >>

I think that is probably true.  She pitched in more games than UCLA played in
the season.

WJ, this is true.  I vaguely remember reading in our state-wide Miss. paper
that she was really hurting by that game.  (Not making excuses for her as she
WAS having her worst game ever.)  The coach was quoted as saying that she had a
cut somewhere on her fingers on her pitching hand and something about her
pitching arm was hurting her.....can't remember exactly where....don't have
that article on hand.  It's a shame....this arm-chair-fastpitch coach thinks
LuAnn could've used her second pitcher more in the season to give Courtney some
rest.  This second pitcher looked like she has ALOT of promise for the next 2
years.

how can one pitcher throw 60 games??

Didn't Massachusets do that last year with Hendersen and then look at this
year???

I was also at the game. The left fielder had a day she would like to forget.
One ball knocked over the fence, misjudged another possible catch at the fence
(no, she didn't knock 2 balls over) and threw one ball into the grass 5 feet in
front of herself trying to get a ball into 2B.  That still doesn't accuont for
how those balls got out that far or were hit that hard to begin with. Everyone
has a bad day. That was Courtney's. She was hit hard and often.

Don't forget a ball she dove for that landed 5 feet in front of her and
allowed an extra base hit instead of a single.  There is no doubt that
Blades was hit hard, but decent fielding would have controlled some of the
damage.  Blades had a tough outing, but the LF let her down instead of
making plays.  Pitching is crucial, but the defense must step up when
needed.
