ASA to pick "New" Olympic team May 3

Post by Rebelsa » Thu, 04 May 2000 04:00:00

News is slowly leaking out of the ASA "bunker" in Oklahoma City regarding the
Julie Smith ruling and the vacating of the current USA Softball Olympic Team.
Here is a portion regarding ASA's actions:

The ASA selection committee will hold an in-person meeting at an undisclosed
location May 3. After reselection of the team and the notification of all 39
players involved in the Olympic Trials, the ASA will make the new team public.

The ASA has notified all 39 players of the arbitrator's order and the selection
procedures that will be followed in Wednesday's selection. In addition, the ASA
has requested contact information in the event there are additional protests
after the new selections. The arbitrator in the Smith case has retained
jurisdiction to resolve any disputes that arise as a result of her order and
the reconvening of the selection committee.

The complete story can be viewed here:

More should be known by the end of today.

Art, you should know better than to take any news from nfca.org, aka Mel
Rosen's web site, aka Ray Foster's web site. The NFCA has other motives in
this and Ray Foster is the worst person to quote....he's a Fresno State fan
who will support not only Julie Smith but also Amanda Scott, Nina
Lindenberg, et. al.

How can the same Olympic Selection Committee that screwed up in the first
place pick a "new" team with "old favors" still intact?

Vince

Good question about how  to pick a new team with Old favors intact. They will
justify the old favors with a spin doctoring that would make politics look
sane.

#1....what's wrong with being a Fresno St. Fan....?

#2.....If your going to support anybody.....Julie Smith, Amanda Scott...and
Nina Lindenberg..are not bad choices.

On this, Vince....we agree!  They should have been mandated to vacate their
post in the disgrace that they carried it out in....Fortunately....their term
will be over shortly......and, maybe....just maybe....Oklahoma wil have gotten
the message.

By the way..and for the record.....the "re" pick...was a farce and embarrassing
to all of us who support the organization with thousand of hours of volunteer
work.

Then Julie should go back to the arbitrator and show what a farce the repick
was. I happen to agree it was truely a farse.

Let me get this straight you're embarrassed for the organization by the
inequities caused by the failure of a system that isn't recognizing three
qualified players abilities but not by the same system that doesn't recognize
multiple players and teams in regard to age group Nationals in terms of number
of available berths for Southern California.  Hmm?  It was interesting to see
you and Andy debate these issues a few months back.   Seems to me to be just
the logical high profile result of the same system!

What are you talking about? The above post is totally vague. The entire
post is above. Which, what, where, etc. would be appropriate. NAMES and
PLACES, please

HUH?....Nice job of trying to put oranges and kumquats all in the same basket.

Item A: The unfairness of the US Olympic selection committee's process and the
farce they called a repick is directly governed by Oklahoma and thus they are
directly responsible for the results.

Item B: The lack of qualifiers or berths alloted to Socal.....is a direct
responsibility of Socal ASA State management team, and, the numbers that they
represent.

In other words.....YOU have responsibility and can get Item B changed.....all
you have to do is make a concerted effort and get involved.

(hard to believe the issue surfaced again)

Bob do you really believe things can be changed? After the Olympic repick
fiasco it has to be as plain as the nose on you face that ASA will do what they
want no matter what is fair.

A better question is,   Is ASA and the selection committee doing what is good
for the game or GOOD for them?

Julie tried to change something and look where it got her.

Logic is always vague concept to some.  I got my answer from Pobob to whom
doesn't also seem to understand instituitionalized abuse of power is an problem
of individual responsibility of an organization's leaders.  It's called ethics
and it is usually a right or wrong issue not oranges and kumquats as our
illustrious ombudsman for the organization with egg on his face may try to spin
it.

Vague?.....It seems very clear to me that it is tough for some to singulate a
problem and deal with it. It's the old...."the new car has a flat....call a
wrecking yard" argument.

We've beat the berth thing to death...and in the end...we're all staying steady
on our arguments, which is ok in my book. However.....the Olympic Selection
Committee issue is a totally separate argument, created by totally separate
individuals.....and allowed to happen by a total different set of management at
a total different level.

Quote:
>It's called ethics

I agree....and is not in question on the berth issue.....the berth issue is a
matter of difference of opinion....which, again, is ok to have.

Well...we're in disagreement where the egg sits....but once you get the
argument correct..i'll have orange juice with that egg.

Sure I do....a few people must go....but there are countless number of
volunteers who spend many thousand of hours making this program work.

I will agree with you that not 100% of what ASA does works...or even makes
sense. And it gets frustrating that changes don't happen overnight.

However....Don, as you know....there are two options:

#1...fight the system and start a new one...very similar to what you've done
with the Women's program....or

#2.....Stay and continue to improve the exisiting program by keeping pressure
on the "sore" spots and getting more and more people involved.

Two different approaches...who's to say that either one is right or wrong.

As we've discussed...the Olympic fiasco is a tough one....think about....we've
got to sell tickets...in Fresno....for the Olympic Visit....in an area that is
not very keen on the idea.....but do we throw in the towell on all the good
things the JO program and some of the *** program do?

I don't think so.

Thanks for the enlightenment.  But when you have OJ with the egg you're dealing
with the whole meal which is my point....some people just can't see the whole
and justify the ends by seperation of conceptual issues. Singular issues become
such when they hit close to home like Fresno....Just as your wrecking yard
theory, I call your complaints the "*** theory" or the "they didn't ask
me theory"   Don't worry, I know your not alone!
