1.  college kids remain in JO program. Very strong movement from east and mid
west to keep all divisions of qualified players available.

The NFCA made a very strong presentation but garnered very little support from
the west on making the change.

Suggest if this is important...you let your Association people know.

2. The west was shut out of all JO nationals for 2002. Gold went head to head
between Clovis and Broken Arrow...with Clovis being inched out by 6 votes.

3. Only 5 remaining players required to qualify teams to keep their berth for
the following year.

4.  Olympic Selection Committee reforms passes based on strong Olympic Player
support and representation. Sheila Douty and Michelle Venturelli on the board.

5. Strong movement to make ASA's Board of Directors smaller by removing past
presidents. Look for this to happen in next few years.

6. National Qualifiers are now considered championship play.

7. 23U moved to *** program from JO.

8. Travel permits have been eliminated.

9. All JO National's, except Gold, have been increased to 128 teams. Gold to
remain at 64.  Additional berths going to top organizations...top 5 get 3
berths....next 5 get 2 berths...and so on.

10. Winners of the former Zone Championships, now called National
Tournaments,....top two winners receive berths to following years National
Championship. TEAMS THAT ARE REQUIRED TO MOVE UP TO THE NEXT AGE GROUP....CAN
TAKE THAT BERTH WITH THEM TO THE NEXT LEVEL.....PROVIDED THEY RETURN 5 PLAYERS.

11. B Nationals will now include pool play.

12. 4 game gaurantee in Gold.

13. Seeding for Gold is now in rule book. Draw must happen. Tournament
Directors cannot place teams in the brackets. (verify this as this is my
interpretation of the rule change.)

14. Selection committee for Olympics will include head coach.

All current members of the selection committee have been excused from service,
however, may reapply.

The selection panel that picks the selection committee will consist of ASA
President, a person selected by the ASA Board of Directors (probably the USOC
Liason), and an athlete representative.

The National Team Selection committee will consist of seven persons.: Minimum
of 2 athlete representatives who meet the requirements of the USOC, the head
coach of the National Team, four members made up of the ASA or allied members
of teh ASA with at least one representative from each the ASA and allied
members.

Coaches pool for both men and women shall be 8 coaches.

Appeals proceedures have also been rewritten.

These are the highlights of the week...in my opinion. If you have anything
specific that you'd like to know....email me or post here and I'll try to
answer for you.

What is the implication of this rule?

Will already qualified Gold teams be allowed to play in National
Qualifiers?

Bob,what do you mean that they had very lettle support for the college kids not
coming back and playing Gold.  Do you mean Southern Calif. wants them in and
didnt fight to get them out, if so who are the voting members from the area.
Hope you meant that the Mid-West didnt want to get rid of them in the program.

And your area, whats their stand on this.

I think what happened here was that there is that the division of play are
already separated by age and the voters probably felt there was no good reason
to add more hoops to jump through.  And in the long run, create more work to
monitor the situation.  Right now, it's simple.

Now, this one confuses me.  National Tournaments presently have nothing to do
with the following year of play.  At least not in the divisions of play now
using them.  They were set up to become a stepping stone to the actual National
Championship, not a consulation game for the following year.

In accordance with Article 207.E.1, *** and JO Gold were allowed to compete
in NQs even though they had already qualified.

It is the JO A teams which are restricted from playing in an NQ unless tehir
forfeit the previously earned berth (207.E.1)

Bob,

Thanks for the extensive report. It is very helpful.

Wasn't there to be continued discussion this year on equipment with
respect to bat and ball livliness (i.e. ball compression, bat BPF,
etc.)?

Where is the ASA parked on the player/pitcher safety issues that have
been the hot-bed of discussion for the past couple of years?

I would like to see actual statistics on the number of injuries to pitchers
,seriousness of injury as a result of balls hit right back at them. I would
also like to see number/seriousness of injuries to all other players during the
course of the game.
id bet that pitchers are hurt with no more frequency than other players.

Is the rule now that the Champions and runner-ups at ASA Nationals last
year get an automatic berth this year even if they move up a division as
long as they have 5 returning players?

So what did they do move the age cutoff up one day? How will that make much
difference?

Don't confuse National Tournaments with National Championships.  Prior to the
legislation just pasted, if you finished first or second in a National
Tournament (formly zone), you earned a berth to the following year's National
Championship in the same age division.  Not, you can take the berth to the next
age division if you have five or more returning players.
